I currently have directv, and got a very good offer from dish but ive never had dish, and was wondering what you all thought of their service and products vs directv? Thanks for your thoughts!

Keep in mind that they use different satellites. If you had to aim your dish thru some gaps in your trees to get DirecTV, you may not be able to see the Dish satellites without cutting some more trees or moving your dish to a different location.

Dish or Direct TV - they are competing satilite TV providers. Very similar from the outside appearence.

I too wonder if one is better than the other?

My brother let his wife switch from Direct to Dish to save a few bucks. What a mistake! Check the channels that they're offering you for that price. Not many. When you step up to the next package, price wise, you loose half of the few that you DO have on the cheap package. You have to go up to the third level to get back the ones that you lost and still get the ones that they add on to make the second. It's not like Direct where you have a basic package then additional channels are added on from there. NO WAY I'd fall for it. Not if you like to watch TV.

We have Dish. We had Direct. Functionally, I couldn't tell any difference. We switched to Dish because they gave us a quote that was $15 a month cheaper than Direct for the same service.

Within three months, Dish was charging what we'd been paying Direct.

Had Dish for years, then they wanted me buy a ton of stuff to get the "upgrades" for $100.00 some dollars. Went to direct TV, have been very happy with the service, the signal does not go out as often as dish did.

I have both at different locations.
Direct TV has a good channel lineup and I think better Sports packages. Direct TV charges for 4.99 for each reciever.

Dish has a single reciever that works for 2 tv's at no additional charge.

Just a note - I have an old antenna that the reception for analog stations is Poor but
the digital reception is outstanding - and it's free!

started out with dtv and now have dish just because dish offers the five local channels here and dtv does not. can't complain about the general service from either one. jim

Put them both in a paper sack, shake 'em up and you cant tell which comes out first, not alot of difference in them.

I have dish, neighbor has direct, both satisfied with what we have other than about $70/month I'm not happy with.

There probably going to offer some great deal to get you on board or to switch that will go away in about 6 months.

I heard a few weeks ago about people getting free T.V. channels thru internet connection, dont know whats available or if anything worth watching, somehow they used a laptop with a A/V cable to the TV, just go to the website via computer and wal-la your watching TV. Sounds great but need to do some research on it.

That`s exactly right!!! They both offer great deals to new customers, then when you`re signed up for 2 years-they got you. To get your best deal, ya almost have to switch back and forth between them every 2 years to get the new customer deals.

We play the game. When the contract is up,we get sweet deals from the competitor and switch back and forth every two years.

We've gotten free portable dvd players, free receivers, free movie channel subscriptions, free pay per view vouchers, upgrades, etc.

As far a service and quality,no difference.

but have dish now. The problems I have with dish is they like to turn off the signal if your not watching tv. Now how do they know when your not watching tv? They say if your not switching channels your not watching tv? so they tune off the signal and sometimes it takes 5-10 minutes to get the signal back. This will only nnalert you off when something like the super bowl is on or Jimmy Johnson and Tony Stewart are side by side on the last lap of a nascar race. Otherwise it ain't a problem, but it has happened on both those mentioned above. Like most say, every two years get your best deal.

You must have something wrong with your equipment. If the receiver doesn't see any remote activity for something like 3 hours on mine, a message pops up that unless you click cancel, the receiver will shut off in one minute. If you loose signal and it's taking 10-15 minutes to get it back, I'd be wondering if your dish needs to be adjusted, or there is a problem with the cable or something.

Direct tv myself before they sent installers out to the boonies, cost me $550.00 for the dish, box, and hardware to install it.

When I switched to dish network they sent a man out to install their junk and it was free. I now have another dish next to my Direct tv dish, and another dish mounted on top of my dogs house pointed in another direction. Yes folks, the local channel dish is mounted on my dog house,(couldn't believe he did that) but so far I haven't managed to moved it with my lawn tractor.

Remote but that didn't do anything but stop me and the wife from handing the remote back and fourth. Then they sent me a new receiver, I hooked it up and I did everything they said to do but It works the same as the other receiver did. Like I said, it's no big deal unless I'm watching something like football or nascar and miss that message.

Boy what a lot of BS on this list. I had Dish for 6 or 7 years never had a bit of trouble they upgraded my equipment at no cost to me an were really pleasant on the phone.
Now I have DrectTV and the picture an quality are the same but I'm going nuts trying to find all my favorite programs there not in the same place as Dish.

The big difference I don't care for is my extra TV has a different box that is not controlled from the main TV. Dish had one box that you setup to be the same or different channels I liked that part.
Another thing I don't like about DTY is when the power flicks on an off it takes forever for the unit to reset itself I'm thinking of putting a power supply on it to keep it going during these little flicks in the power that we get out here in the country. Also you can record two programs at once on DTV.
I guess its just what you like.
One other thing out here on the west coast we lost ABC because of a dispute with the company that owns all of the ABC station up an down the coast.
That was why I switched to DVT other than that I would have stayed with Dish.
One other thing the satellites are right next to each other and the dish is pointing in the same direction as my old one.

Directv has a higher dish degree set-up than the dish network. Switching providers means new/ reaimed dish or poor reception if any. Playing the 2 year game is the only way to get the best deals out of them!.
You can call them and they always have some kind of incentive. Last year was $5 less in February just for asking what they had to offer to lower my bill. Just don't accept anything FREE, sooner or later that Free will cost you.
Guido.

I don't like either company, but cable is not an option for us. Comcast wants 1500 bucks "to upgrade their infrastructure" before they'll hook us up. Never mind that we were customers for many years until we switched to Dish Network, and there's a nearly new cable right up to the house.

We had Dish for years, but a couple of years ago we kept having reception problems. We couldn't get anyone out here, and when they did come they always said the bad reception was because of our trees. Well, we cleared out a bunch of trees so we had a clean shot and it still wouldn't work. Calling Dish for support would get you someone in India reading a script.

For a couple a years I would try to switch to DirecTV. We would order the service, and that's the last we would hear. A month later I'd call back and would be told that the order had been cancelled, no explanation. Finally a couple of months ago I tried again. Ordering satellite TV service is an exercise in endurance, this time I was able to actually get service installed, and it works flawlessly.

Oh, back to Dish Network. When I called to cancel service, all the sudden I wasn't talking to India anymore. I was speaking to a pleasant man with a midwestern accent. He asked if there was anything they could do to convince me not to cancel, for example, how about replacing all of my equipment with all new equipment? I told them it was a little late for that. For the next week or so, I received several calls from pleasant people who wanted to know if there was anything they could do to convince me not to cancel.

So, my experience is that Dish does not care one iota about there current customers, until you actually cancel your service. Is DirecTV any better? I guess I'll find out.

I have had DISH for about 10 years...I have mine packaged with my phone and internet company.....last few years --one bill per month.....runs about $120...that includes high speed internet and unlimited long distance...
I pay extra for the Outdoor Channel...and an extra reciever....

just hate when the weather turns funky....get blackouts...

I have Dish at our vacation home. when I have had problems they have the worst customer service I have ever dealt with. You talk to people in Pakistan. Since I'm not there enough to worry about it I have nevr changed.
If I was there all the time, I'm sure I would have switched to Direct.

I have had both DirecTv and DishNetwork. Not much difference from one to the other. As far as signal, the only time we lose it is when we have really hard rain, so for 5-15 minutes at most, a few times a year. Pricing depends on whatever special they are advertising for the area at the time. Customer service has been hit and miss. When I first had DirectTV about 10 years ago, I bought the system from Wal-Mart, set it up myself, made the phone call to activate it that same night, never had an issue right up through when I cancelled it and moved to a place with cable. Next time around, Dish had a multi-room and install special, had to call once or twice to straighten out billing, no big deal. Moved again, had Dish installed with 2-room DVR. Contract expired, got "great low price" on DirecTv. Currently I am eyeballs deep in a billing dispute, have called every month since we got it about 6 mo. ago. Evening call center folks can't do much, waiting for a response to a letter. Will go back to Dish as soon as I can get out of this contract.

We went with the DVR, I personally wouldn't have pay TV without it. There are only a few shows I want to watch, and I'm not one to plan my day around a tv program. The Dish Network DVR has more / better features, especially if you go with the 2 room Dual DVR. We could record 2 shows at once from either room and play back any of the recorded shows on either tv as well. DirecTv can record 2 shows on one DVR, but you can only watch one thing at a time.

I have Dish network and other than the few times a year I lose signal due to weather, can`t complain about their service.Ihaven`t had to talk to their service reps , though, so maybe my opinion would change after a talk with them. I too, really like the dual tuner/DVR set up that Dish has.
