John Deere 850

Need some basic info. My son-in-law just bought a
place in the country (Central MN) and the previous owner agreed to include his utility tractor in the deal. It's an 850 Deere. Saw it today briefly and got some info off of tractordata. Did not get the s/n. There's a Deere
dealer nearby so he's going to have them look it
over, change fluids etc. Did not get a manual with it. My question is...what is known about them? Any problems generally? Did Deere build these or source them from someone? Thanks for
your help. Pat Klise Long Lake MN

Yes they were built by Yanmar and is an excellent small tractor, you might inquire at the JD dealer about parts availability on these any more, I think some things are getting scarce.

My dad has had an 850 for about 10 years now. They are a handy little tractor. We haven't had any problem finding parts. Ours is an early model, 2wd, no power steering, no remotes, and single stage clutch. Basically we have found it to be a very dependable machine.

Remote hydraulics are easy to add (although a little pricy) and I believe parts are still available through Deere. Same goes for power steering. You should be able to run a 5' mower or 5' snowblower without any trouble, especially if you have the 2-stage clutch. If the rear tires aren't loaded with fluid it will be a little too light to pull much or be stable on hills.

I personal own one right now and I love it. I have had mine for 5 years or so and other than changing the fluids it has not given me any problems. I use my mainly for mowing with a 5' brush hog and it always performs like a top. I think this is one of the best compact tractors ever made.
