You know those light chocolate brown colored round things you find growing, must be a fungus or mushroom, that when you crush or step on repeatedly, makes a cloud of dust or spores, usually have a small hole on top, I was wondering if anyone knew the correct name for them, I found one at the end of last summer and kept it, darned thing was bigger than a basketball, never saw one so large, figured it might amuse someone or maybe its some ridiculous record.

Around here we call them puff balls.

Some people eat them before they get to the puff stage.

I have never eaten one so don't blame me if you get sick.

When conditions are right they will get that big.

These must be white before they turn and do that, that is what I thought they were called, and that is what turned up when I did the search, figured they might be 2 different things, says you can eat them, but knowing the potential toxicity of these things, no way I'd touch em. Never saw one this large, thought it might be an anomaly or something, be funny if it actually was, worlds largest puff ball.

We call them snowballs or puffballs. Yes you can eat them but you have to get them when they are fresh or small. Don"t let them get too mature, they wil get woody in texture on the inside and I think they are too far along to eat. Never saw anybody die from one yet!!

(quoted from post at 18:46:48 02/13/09) I have eaten them. If you fry the slices in bacon grease, they taste just like bacon grease!
agree teddy. Back in the 40s and 50s we called them the devils snuff box. David............
