Roadside grass cutting

Does anyone cut the grtass along the roads for their township? How much do you charge if you do. They are looking for a kilometer rate for one swath on both sides of the road. Any info would help.

Do like they do in Oklahoma. Just let the Johnson grass grow. They thing it makes good hay.

Figure labor time, equipment time, insurances and costs. If your happy never mind what others charge. Some quotes figure worse case senerio but
your opening the door to someone like me that'll be more realistic and undercut your price.

In my part of SW North Dakota if I don't get it done by a certian date in the fall either the county or township board does it and charges $100.00 a mile. It shows up on the next years land taxes. They even charge me for the 200 yards or that belong to the old church.

I do it along my property for appearance sake. The town does it about twice a year and it gets to looking bad.

The county does two side of the property and the state does the other side. If my neighbor wants his cut he can do it himself.

I have been getting $10 @ ac for swathing and use a 14 ft machine. If I were cutting 16.5 ft that would be an ac to the half mile. So a mile of highway would be 4 ac at that width which you are not cutting but you are making the trip over the ground. So I'd say I'd be glad to mow for $40 - $50 a mile. Now depending on the terrain and how many tires you are going to ruin with bottles and stakes you may need to increase that.

Used to do that for the county - employee, their equipment. Was a real nasty job. Was a pair of us working in team, if we didn't get at least one flat a day, we had a good day. Tore up a lot of sickles, guides on roadside objects. Today they use a much heavier tractor with rotary mower on a hinged hydraulic arm. Expensive to operate. Few years back neighbor thought he could contract mow and make money. By the time he got a roadside mower, and a heavy enough tractor to carry it, he had a small fortune wrapped up in it. The price will depend a lot on location. The best thing to do is ask around to see what others are charging. My insurance co. will not insure me for road side cutting. There is almost no cutting necessary here in Calif, too dry. Most cities spray what weeds do grow. Stan

to cowman.. you would be broke in short order at those rates,..you would not beleive the stuff that hides out along those road ditches....
