Intake noise

I have converted an 18hp murray garden tractor into an offroad wheelchair. I need real advice. I would like to quieten it down as much as possible, and have heard that a lot of the engine noise results from the intake system. I have also heard that a cheap, and effective way to quite intake noise is to install a regular exhaust muffler (backward) in the intake line. Does anyone know if this will work? Has anyone actually tried it?

It might help, however I can't see this as the main point of noise.
I would check to see if the brand of engine you have is also available in a gen-set, rv application in particular. these engines have items designed for quietness that might fit yours. also, think about sound absorbing material around cowling--good luck, paul

The typical COVERED air-cleaner (with pleated element) will keep the carb noise down..
Noise from the blower housing and exhausts are the big problem..unless you have noise from harmonics going to the engine mount and frame...

Single cyl engines are just noisy. About all you can do is lower the rpm and inclose the engine in a well vented solidly built box. Not taxing the engine will lesson the heat. The intake just makes a minor sucking noise.

Dan – Like Dieselpaul suggests not much noise comes from the intake. Only under full load (ie. with carb throttle plate wide open) will you get noise you can even distinguish from other engine sounds.

You don't say what engine is on your Murray but this applies to all air-cooled engines: Aside from the obvious the exhaust, noise comes from the cooling (flywheel) fan and from general mechanical (valve mechanism) clatter.

These noises can be attenuated by partially surrounding/shielding the engine with sound deadening material. But you must leave PLENTY of space for cooling airflow! Look at an enclosed air cooled standby or RV generator for ideas how manufacturers accomplish this.

Your cheapest solution however is to install the quietest muffler you can find, then simply operate the engine at the lowest RPM's possible. Ie run the machine in a high a gear with the engine running at or just above idle.

Good luck – it sounds like an interesting and useful project!

They make aftermarket kits for ATV's that are a second muffler that attaches to the tail pipe of the first. My neighbor checked one out at Cabelas. But it was kinda expensive. So he made his own with flex pipe and a good size muffler.Quited his Atc down.He just puts around and hunting use.

Thank you all for your help. I am glad I asked before trying to buy a muffler and put it into the intake system. I appreciate all your help.
