Just got coupons for converter boxes. I use old TV with cable but cannot get captions. I miss about half of e verything. Somebody told me box would allow captions to work even if TV does not handle this. Think it will work. Hoping. Dave

Yes, the converter box will usually add close captioning, a program guide and in many boxes, a signal strength meter. a very helpfull feature for fine tuning the antenna.

Check the features listed on the box before you buy, they are not all the same.
If you have cable or may ever add satellite TV to your off antenna system, make sure the converter box has an analog feed through / pass through feature, as the satellite system signal delivered to your TV will be an analog signal.

Negative on the analog signals from satellite TV. All satellite transmissions are digital and all you need is the box supplied by thew satellite co. Satellite TV has always been digital.. Henry

On re read of your post, I may have misunderstood how you get your TV signal to that old set. If you attach the DTV converter box to an outdoor antenna, it will add close captioning to your old TV set.
If you are getting a local channel off a cable TV system, then the the converter box will not work (no close captioning) if the cable TV system converts DTV to an alalog signal.

I disagree, my Dish satellite tv system converts the digital satellite signal to analog for my TV tuner.

The dish shouldn't be supplying your TV's tuner on ch3 or something.
The satellite box should be connected direct to the tv through the composite jacks or a S-VHS plug.

I agree B&D, that is the best for a tv in the same room / entertainment center etc. The problem is for more tv's in other rooms, then it is easier to use the sat TV reciever modulator and move the signal by coax to the tv's antenna connection.
Thats why my comment to get converter boxes with the analog feed through feature. That way you can feed an analog signal from the sat TV through the converter box to watch sat tv on a remote tv, yet use a switch box to switch the antenna coax from the sat tv modulator to the antenna to decode / watch DTV from the outdoor antenna using a DTV converter box on that remote set.
A little loss of signal quality, but makes for easy wiring for multiple sets.
