Hydraulic question

I just bought a 1974 Wain Roy loader/backhoe with a 450 diesel. I started it up today after using it two days ago and I have no hydraulics. I put fresh fluid in the other day and I dont know weather or not I have air in the lines. I can get it to the point where the pump whines and tries to lift the loader but it stops whinning and trying to lift after about 5 seconds. Is the pump bad?

The pump could be bad but maybe not. Make sure the oil reservoir for the hydraulic system is full. Then, with the tractor running, loosen the line on the discharge side of the pump and see if the pump will prime. It may take a few minutes for this to happen. Loosen the line just enough to allow any air in the pump to escape and if the pump primes, then tighten the line back up before you shut it down. Make sure the pump isn't sucking air on the supply side. rw

Did you use the correct hydraulic fluid? Not all hydraulic systems use 'hydraulic oil'. Too thick a fluid will cause the symptoms you describe.

An example of the wrong fluid would be putting
tractor "Transdraulic" into a system calling for
ATF, or 10-30 motor oil. The transdraulic works
OK with all of those gears to churn it and warm
it up, but it won't work good in a system calling
for a thinner product.

I have a Ford 860 and have been using it to scrape snow. It takes about 8-10 minutes after I start the engine before the fluid gets warm and will lift.Probably needs a thinner fluid. I know I used a hydraulic-gear fluid in my 400 Farmall and it wouldn't do nothing when using the hydraulics so I went to IH dealer and bought some HY-TRAN and it worked like a it was new. Also ,when puttinsg in new fluid ,work the hydraulic levers to get the air out of the lines and pump.

I bought my first tractor and i am not sure on the hydraulics , it works real well in the summer but in the winter it freeze , i was told i have to replace the hydralic oil but i am not sure on how to do that can someone please tell me where to find the drain plug on a 1976 Cockshutt 1450 . P.S. a picture would be nice. thank you. Don.
