Antique beam scale

Need some help/info.

I have an antique farm beam scale that is 58" long with a scale of 10 to 200 pounds by tens on one side and 20 to 400 by twenties on the other side. I only have one of the counter weights and it weighs 8 pounds.

Can anyone tell me which scale the 8 pound weight is used with and how much the other counter weight should weigh? I want to fabricate one up so I can use both scales on the beam.

Appreciate the help.

Thanks.

Well, you could start by weighing yourself, using the weight you have, and see if you get a reasonable reading on one of the scales.

Just so you'll know they are called 'steelyards.'
Hang a known weight and then see where the eight pound pea measures the weight. The other pea should read either four or sixteen pounds. I'm guessing four. Dad had a similar set and I'm thinking the big pea was not sixteen pounds.
I'd like to know when you get it figured.

My Father-in-law gave us one years ago and there was only one weight with it so I made a couple using a very accurate scale and machine shop equipment. I believe it said Gurneys on it and it was curved like a J. Very accurate when set up right.
