oil stop leak addatives???

Hey folks,
I have a little Kia that just started leaking oil from either the frt cam seal or frt main seal. It was dry as a bone until I had an oil change last week. 500 miles later everything is soaked and it leaves a mess wherever you park it. Wondering if there was some snake oil in there that kept the seals swollen that drained out with the oil change and the seals shrunk.
Think that's possible?

Thanks, Dave

Dave,
It has been my experience with the leak stoppers that they are
a very short term solution. They will "swell" a bad seal but since
the seal is dying already the help is temporary.

Just seems strange that it hit all at once. Costs about 5 bucks for the 2 possible seals (wish the labor would be so cheap). Got an appointment day after tomorrow.

Thanks, Dave

Could be, I know that the old Cadillac Northstar engines came from the factory with a sealer in the coolant system.

Sounds strange, hardly ever see one go from no leak to pouring in 500 miles usually a gradual thing. Check the crankcase ventilation system.

I suppose this was this the first oil change?

If it hasn't just dried out from sitting, there might not be any hope. BUT,with that said,I bought a White 2-135 tractor about 7 years ago. Don't know how long it had been sitting on the dealer lot,but after just a little running, oil was running out the rear main seal in a stream. I went to the autoparts store, figured I had nothing to loose. Bought some Lucas oil addative. Half a day of chisel plowing it was down to a drip, within 2 days, sealed it right up. Here it is 7 years later,I can park it right out in the snow and not a drop of oil under it. Lucas makes different additives, and I couldn't tell you exactly which one I used, but must have said something about engine seals on it. OR MIRACLE

That COULD have been a result of switching from a non-synthetic or synthetic blend oil to a pure synthetic(POA) oil................

SOME of the synthetic oils do not have the same "seal swell" properties/additives as the mineral based oils...............

SOME synthetic oils are available with extra "seal swell" additives and are usually sold as "for vehicles with 120,000 kms or more......"

It'd be good idea to check out the PCV system as well......................

I'll check the PCV. I don't know what was in it before (just bought it in sept. ) but they changed the oil and used half synthetic.

I've never believed in 'snake oil' additives, but the Chevette's front seal was leaking pretty bad so I threw in a can of Rislone, and by golly the seal pretty much stopped. Went from about a quart to every 500 miles to a quart every 2000. It worked about a year and then the leak came back. Jim

Dave, what probably happened is that the kids at the oil change place overfilled it. That will start them to leaking and blow seals. Next problem may be that they used off-brand synthetic in it. Mobil One has all the additive package to keep the seals swelled and soft. Next problem may be that they put an off-brand filter on it of the wrong spec and it has restricted the oil flow and raised the pressure. Next problem is are you sure its not leaking at the filter? Tom

Probably wasn't mobil oil, filter is the same one that came off it (brand/type), not leaking at the filter. Coming out somewhere behind the timing cover. Thinking I'll put in some stopleak and drive it a week it'll still cost the same to fix it if it still leaks.

tHIS WORKED ON mY 95 CUMMINS dODGE , around 200,000 miles it started leaking oil from the front seal , put up with it for another 100,000miles ,,, last fall I added Lucas stop leak to engine and have driven 2500 miles and have not come off the full mark yet ,, you Guys say and do as You wish , personally I prefer to leave the wrenches in the box if a simpler solution is available ,,,But thats JUST ME ..
