Machinery storage outside

More and more townships here in New York are considering/implementing codes for machinery/ vehicles not parked inside a building.
Some are looking at stuff outside has to have good paint, clean, and mowed under. Some are looking items parked out of view from road and neighboring houses. Limits on non-runners are being looked at. Permits (if issued) would not be automatic but would have to go through an approval process.
In my part of the state this is still fairly isolated but the rural communities around here are being run more by those from a non-farm background. I am expecting this to become a much bigger issue in the near future.
What are other people seeing and how are you dealing with it?

There was a little talk about it once. There is already an ordinance about junk, but farm machinery is exempt. I personally have had a little talk with the supervisor,a few board members and the code enforcer. Just politely told them, with no witnesses, that enforcing such a thing on me wouldn't be in their best personal interest if you get my drift.

It has always been like this were I am in NY, you could only have 1 unregistered car in your yard. 3 out of my 5 trucks are registered. The other 2 are out of sight. My friend has a few off the road trucks, most dont even run, but someone complained to the town. Town came looking and said something to him, but they havent pursured him further, trucks are still there. All you need is one person to pitch a complaint. Next thing thell find a way to tax us for our junk LOL JinNY

It was a hard decision to leave the family farm after we quit milking cows, but I moved west(IA). I grew up on a dairy in MA. I just could not stand the BS of all the stuck up snobs who thought they could control everything, and never gave a single thought to the people who were there first and built the towns they live in..( I also had other issues at hand, but thats a whole nother story). I'm sure its only a matter of time before it heads this way, but generally if you live in the country you can do what you want here.
To answer your question I really don't know what you can do besides put up a good "fight". That is exactly the type of things that I could never understand, unless maybe you are dumping oil in the ground or otherwise doing harm to someone/something, what you do with your place and how it looks should be up to you. Not all of us can have new equipment all painted and mowed under....Sorry for the rant, just my 2 cents....Jim

My opinion?? Any old piece of machinery in the front yard is better that most of that "modern art" upscale people have in their yard. Also, everyone would LOVE to have the storage space to shed all their machinery, but that is very expensive. Maybe they are looking at increased tax revenue from the buildings that would have to be built.

We are not at the point where we are fighting yet, but I want to head trouble off. A lot of the non farm people (they were in their youth) on my road will be gone in few years and the people that will buy their homes probably will not tolerate a lot of the current practices here.
Most of the neighbors including myself already have taken steps (away from the road, out of view) to keep good relations and avoid being dictated to by law. I don't think anybody has issues with machinery in general. However a couple of the old guard has issues with a fellow who keeps 12 - 15 partially disassembled rusty pieces just a few feet off the road where you have at least 15 houses within a quarter mile.
I would prefer that issue would get worked by the people immediately affected by this. I am afraid this will get out of control if the town board gets involved.

People mess up the cities and then move to the country to escape and start making the same mess there.

This kind fo stuff from our cities really chapps my back side. All it took for the city to in get involved in our stuff was for someone driving by, and telling the city they didn't like to see equipement parked so close to the road where they could see it. Most of that farming equipment was put there by my Dad before he died. As far as I was concearned that was where it was going to stay. Some of it was old and rusted. After I talked to some young girl at the city, and explained what it was they backed off some. My brother did move one of his pickups, and a pile wood from his cattle pens. So far so good. Some of these people let a little athourty go to their heads. You should see some stuff our citie puts up, and calls it art. Most of it is a bunch junk, that looks like it was made by a bunch of 3 rd. graders. Stan

I"ve alway"s believed that what a man did on his own property was his business and no one else"s. However, it does chap my a$$ to see a nice piece of equipment setting out in the weather rotting! With that being said, I have no business telling him what to do with it, and I don"t believe anyone else should either.

Stan you just hit the nail on the head. If anyone says anything about my
'collection" Im gonna tell them its art from now on,,,,, we should all do this? Rusted out equipment, hey, its a work in progress!lol

We have seen this at different times within the town, they tried it with me over an old K-10 chevy plow truck in the yard, no plates, I did not respond to it, it kind of went away, but it is hard to comment without looking at the established local town codes, our place is still zoned A42 agricultural, seems they have pushed this issue with commercial operations, a friend in the paving business had to relocate his shop, even though his yard was fenced in. Those who really have a lot of these things around their place, have dealt with harassment over this, it kind of depends on how visible it is and who is pushing it. I think it is frustrating for some, you pay land taxes and they want to control what you keep on it. Within reason ok, I can understand to a certain extent, based on rationale to eliminate safety hazards and to keep people in check about it so the whole town does not become a salvage yard, but if you keep your place neat, don't pollute or contaminate, and like many people, you have some old equipment for hobby, still in ag use, or other reasons like spare parts etc., I think it's a bit discriminatory.

Not sure where in the state you guys are located. I'm near syracuse, have a few old pickups kickin around, with a few tractors and equipment..just for fun, I dont farm. None of its close to the road, and I try to keep everything tasteful. Try to keep everything moved around too. I wonder if they will lay off with the economy getting worse, people may not have the money to clean up a property.

Ultimetly, the idea is to move out in the hills somewhere, that way, if you can see my stuff, your trespassing.

Syracuse, will you be going to the farm show at the State fair grounds? I missed it last year do to the weather, hope to go this year.

I'm in a semi-rural area. I think there is a code in my subdivision that states you can't have vehicles stored between the road and the front of the house. To the side and rear there is no restrictions. To me, that is a reasonable requirement. I do keep my stuff at the bottom of the hill behind the house, out of consideration for my neighbors and to keep them out of sight of thieves.

Although we are in good old conservative Upstate, that sucking sound is us being pulled into the abundant vaccum of Downstate! I live on the Pa/NY border, and as soon as my step daughter graduates from HS (2 more years) I will be changing my nickname to "Pete76Pa"!
The parking of machinery and vehicles has been an issue for a while in certain municipalities around Binghamton for a few years. One extremely yuppy community wants to limit the days that people who burn wood for heat actually burn.
Now the Gov. wants to put the flatulence tax in place, charge farmesr a road tax based upon how far their manure spreader travels...next it will be registaration and inspection of Ag. equipment!

Dident they want to charge a fee for cow farts too. 170.00 a head FOR dairy cows and 85.00 for beef cows. A tax for methane or somthing.

Yes, but not that much...cattle, sheep, goats, poultry...instead of adding all these fees let's try some cuts:
I worked for an Upstate County Sheriff's Dept. for most of the '80's into the 90's. If you discounted the two Villages with PDs of their own, we (the Sheriff's Dept.) handled between 80-85% of the complaints/calls for service, and the local NYSP baracks (about the same contingent of men as the Sheriff's Dept) handled the other 15-20%. At that time the average Trooper made about 50% more than a Deputy with the same time on the job. Now I know that since 911 was installed the numbers may have evened out some, but why not be like alot of Southern States: Have specialized NYSP Units: SWAT, Highway Patrol, BCI...that assist Local Departments where needed, cut the amount of Troopers significantly, and use some of the $$$$ saved to bolster strengthen Local Departments, and let the State, absorb the rest toward its deficeit?

Seems like nobody pays attention to little violations around here. Nobody has a stroke if someone parks a pickup out in the backyard for a year, or has a tractor under a tarp near the garage. Local officials don't have the resources to enforce aesthetics ordinances like that here, I think.
However, every now & then someone writes a letter to the editor (local Paper) complaining how unsightly properties are along this one road, just outside of town, that gets some tourist traffic. It's a balancing act & along with freedom goes responsibility. Mark SW Wis.

Yes,your state might not want to waste funds on such nonsense. Ah..... but here in New York seems like they THINK they have funds for everything... Well it aint so , You should see the list of things our Governer Patterson wants to tax us on, things like non diet soda, hair cuts camping fees, beer, wine heck I cant even remember all the things.

It's quite common in Wis to see driveways decorated with old farm machinery. Most of it is solid iron and quite rusty and personally, I'm amused but think it would look like hell sitting along the sides of my driveway. I just wouldn't do it but I will never complain about it either.

Just tell them that you don't like seeing $300,000 dollar forclosed houses on every street and maybe they should start bulldozing them down because they are an eyesore. State, local and federal government organizations have their heads so far up their rear they don't know what they're doing anymore. Go after the a holes not paying their bills. Not the guy that has too much farm equipment in his yard. He's probably the only guy on his block that has any cash in the bank. Usually the way it works.

NY state gov doesn't mind what is in the yards cause a stug would have to explain what is in the yard. Need more like him that are not sighted in government. The famous Bago from ILL will be on TV today stating he was high jacked. He must think he was on a plane? Racketeering? The woman interviewer cut him off today when he went into pap smears as one of his biggies as gov. Remember some one had to elect you county board officers to govern for your good and neighbors who turn you in for a car that is setting beside the shed.
