Neithbor is trying to figure out. How to get rid of all the Poison Ivy around the tree's on his 8 acrea's. Any idea's on this matter that might help him. ... His wife has already become real ill of the IVY and he just bougth this land.
Will his cattle eat it and if so what happens?

Well since he don't live on it yet full time. He would not have them animals very long. For I am say back in the woods. There are some nasty animals out there at times. Even a very very large tan cat has been reported. Think it is a Cougar. Have seen the tracts around but seen it eye to eye. Plus a lot of Coyotes to. But thanks for responding.

Jd2wd is correct on goats and sheep, they will eat it down to the roots. Roundup will kill it, but must be put on carefully as it kills everything. Most cattle do not go for it. JimN

If you can identify the plants, then I would spot treat it with a brush killer like Crossbow. You can "spike" it with a little roundup, surfactant and maybe even some Atrazine. Guarantee nothing will grow there after this treatment

Round up works fine on it. Just spray the ivy and not ther tree barks and it should wipe it out.

For vines going up the tree. Cut them and dab a bit of straight roundup on the cut end of the stub going to the ground.

There is a fella that used to post some good info on here who once said if you get goats they will eat it and wipe it out and if you drink the goats milk after they have eaten a bunch of it, you will become immune to poison ivy. Don't know if it's true about the milk part but I know they will clean it up pretty fast.

You would have to pen them up around it right ?? I would think they would rather eat something else if there was more than enough vegatation to choose from.......

Brush-B-Gone works for the stuff on the ground. For the vines climbing the tree, cut them near the ground.

Hopefully your friend isn't as sensitive to Poison Ivy as his wife is. If you're around the stuff long enough you will develop a resistance. Neither I or my wife are affected by it. I can pull poison ivy out of the ground with my bare hands.

You know, I have always heard you develop a resistance, but I never have...I have even taken the poison ivy pills to try to build up a resistance. Pretty much every year I'll get into some while clearing brush, and pretty much every yesr I'll get open blisters on my wrists-
I hate the stuff!

My farm tennant says "Crossbow" will kill poison oak and poison ivy no problem. He says to make it really work, add some diesel fuel to the mix. 2-4-D will get it too. 2-4-D probably won"t bother the tree. I say probably because I sprayed my yard with one of those 25 gal tow behind your mower sprayers to get the weeds in the lawn. I tried to be careful to not get too much on the trees, but some did. Never saw any adverse effects on any of the trees.

I found that roundup appeared to kill poison ivy but it came back the next year from the roots. BrushBGone killed it permanently.

My dad was not sensitive to poison ivy until he was in his 80s. Allergies can change, usually becoming more sensitive.

Shouldnt hurt the tree as long as you dont get it on the leaves. And I would leave out the Atrazine.

If it is a young, small, valuable tree then I would try to clip or cut the stem of the poision ivy and treat the stump with Tordon RTU (REady to Use)
