I am wanting to make a pasture drag out ot 20 inch truck tires. What is the easist way to drill holes that 5/8 in hole will go through
Thanks Amo.

Your show, but I tried the tire idea and it was a lot of work for little improvement. I ended up using tire chaines, a few rims tied together, and a big tractor tire. Ended up settling on 3 fence postes thied together with about a 16" space between them.

I am with Dave2 on this one. I have a tire drag with 5 tires (2 over 3) bolted together and it really did not do a very good job of breaking up the piles. It did kind of knock the tops off and smear them a little. I bit the bullet and bought a chain harrow which also does a nice job on the arena.

FWIW, I just took a 3/4" drill bit and went after the tire. It was tough going, but I did get holes made and bolted them together.

The best and cheapest harrow I have run accross came from my wore out Hog Haven Hog Floor.I use one of the fence panels from it.It is welded to a 2 inch rectangular metal tubing to stiffen the panel. It also has 2 pieces of tubing welded in place evenly in the middle part of the panel and it has enough weight that it totally destroys and really scatters even the biggest cowpie

How do you put a hole through a hole? Sorry but that's what your post asked. I'd try a drill bit and if that didn't work, a hole saw should. Dave

I went to a sale and found an old 12' drag (cable pull) spring tooth for $50. Has a pipe frame. You can pull it around on the frame or set the teeth as deep as you want for cleaning up a lot. Makes a good road drag also. I set the teeth down a little to clean up the corral. Haven't tried it in the pasture.

(quoted from post at 17:53:36 01/26/09) I am from an area where we do not do this. What is the point of dragging a pasture ?

I don't know about cows, but horses won't eat where they sh!t, and it takes a long time for a pile to break down and grass to grow (also the last piece of grass a horse will eat even when it does grow). Break and scatter everything and you get a nice even fertilizer and the horses won't be so persnickety about eating. Also smooths out mole hills.

How much does the chain harrow weigh and how small can you collapse it? You wouldn't believe what they cost here, I was thinking about having my buddy buy a used one and mail it to me. I have a 70 pound weight limt though.

The best pasture drag I have found is an old mattress springs. I do all my pastures 2 times a year with a queen sized mattress pulled behind my 4 wheeler. I put 2 feed bags full of sand on the back of the mattress and after one pass there are no piles left. Part of its success is the speed of the 4 wheeler and the repeat beating that the springs give it passing over.

I had this notion of taking the bars and teeth off of an old hayrake I had in the weeds, making a frame for them to fasten too, and set it so the teeth just drag along.....

I use my 8 ft 3 point blade. Yes the same one I use for snow and gravel. I set it straight, or no angle and go after the gopher mounds and they spread right out.

Dude.. You're a genious!!! That's better and lighter than my fence post idea. Con a couple of kids to go "slay riding" and I don't have to lug sand bags around (just kidding).
