A mechanic changed my '51' 8N over to a 12 volt system while he was doing some repairs for me.Am new to this tractor thing and am learning. What has changed....is distributor cap same, points and cond.,wires,he didnt convert coil(just switched wires he said)...anything i need to know or undersatnd will get a big ole TEXAS thank you right up front...is DONE,Thank you guys,ya are always so helpfull/Randy

The 6 volt coil will work great on 12 volts for a while, but will tend to burn the points and the coil will overheat and go bad unless it has a resistor added. There is NO shortcut to running a 6 volt coil on 12 volts.

That is a great coversion ,if done right. The starter spins faster and engine starts faster.coil probably needs a resistor to prevent burning up the coil and points. If you have lights you need to change bulbs to 12 volts.I have done several of those conversions, but has been a while.some one else may have more info.

Just re read your post, and wondered what was lnstaled for chargeing.an alternator or 12volt generator with 12volt regulator Also where in TX are you located?

I am lost.Just talked to Jeff at YTC,am really in a mess.I live in Waxahachie Tx.he put in an Alternator,he said was set up fine as was using old 6 volt coil.Jeff says if he put in a resister the 6 is fine. One bulb burned out the other still works...am really confused now!!!!

Yea he seems to know what he was doing and said he had done several.I have the 12 volt lights have not put in yet.Jeff says is a mystery why 1 6 volt bulb blew and othe rhasnt and i sure dont know?????

One time when I was switching a tractor over I got daring and pulled on the light switch with new 12V bat. installed, before I changed the headlamp bulbs- they worked! at least temporarily. Then I got stupid and tried with the engine running-bat. charging-fried bulbs immediately. So if you burned out one 6V bulb but not another w/12V then you just reached a voltage where one went and the other was not quite there yet. It wouldn't be long for this world anyhow.

Thanks to all ya,am just trying to learn all this tractor stuff.Am learning but sure have a tough time sometimes,,,such as changing the front spindle bearings and bushings...WOW!!!Thanks again to all ya!!!!
