Diesel additive ?

Hey guys I work for the reailroad as an equipment repairman, in the last year and a half I have had several injection pumps go bad since they changed the fuel to the ultra low sulfer diesel. It doesn"t seem to affect the old 2 cycle Detroits or the common rail engines so far just the engines with injection pumps, mainly JD indudstials and a few trucks. I was told by the service managers at JD and Cummins that the new fuel doesn"t lubricate as good as the old fuel and thats why they are wearing out anybody have similar problems, I use Howes lubricator in the winter but I might start using it all year now. I am mainy worried about my folks tractors as they can"t afford to be changing injection pumps and injectors . T.J.

I use Power Service Diesel Supplement which has an anti-gel and Cetane boost in it. It does not say anything about extra lubrication like Diesel Kleen or Agri-Power. I use it all year long. So far I haven't had a problem, but I'm thinking I might switch to something for added lubricity since I've been reading so much about the lack of it in new fuels.

When we first switch from regular diesel fuel to low sufler I had fuel pump problems with Cummins truck engines and my farmall 560D. Now with a second change to ultra-low sulfer I am having fuel pump problems with a 3406 Cat truck engine. Most of my problems appear to be seals and o-rings leaking. Once The seals and o-rings are replaced (upgraded?) the problems seem to be solved. Armand

local reputable pump shop told me PS (with alcohol) is very hard on pumps which is good for business but not customers pocket book, they told me to never use it and that stanadyne has a good product also sold at JD, I would never run it year around, we use a percentage of soy dsl for added lubricity in the summer

I had 2 calls in a row late last year--#1 was ford 3000, throttle stuck open, owner had to drop in hi gear & dump clutch to kill--#2 was air compressor with ford industrial. stuck @ low idle. Both had sims pumps, both had set 30-45 days--fuel racks/plungers stuck-was able to free both on site, pump on compressor had internal gov. damage because owner had tried to make it rev on up with starter fluid.both had ulsd,no additive. these older pumps have to have lubricity added. i have heard of motor oil,2-cycle oil, trans fluid-but additive designed for this surely would protect 0-rings better-imo paul

I've been using Power Services for years now mostly for anti gel and water control. All the new Power Services I buy now have a lubricity additive. I add it to every tank of fuel I buy at the pump and pre mix my farm tank. I have 11 older diesel engines and 3 new ones. No pump problems. My new VW TDI diesel requires a additive with lubricity. Some of the guys around here like Stanadine (?) additive.

That's BS!

Power Service Has "NO" alcohol in it. It does have lubricant added also.
I'm not saying it's the best and Iv' e seen all the test data on additives,
But I have used it for over 30,years with No problem.
You do need to Double the dose in extreme cold with Bio-Blends, and it tells you to do so.
The ULSD Fuels our Gov. is forcing on us is Garbage, but we have to burn it.
Stanadyne is also a good product to use.
They've even got organic supplements out now. Won't use that Crap either.

I believe the post about Power Service (with alcohol) refers to the 911 version of Power Service , which does in fact contain alcohol, and is for use in gelled up fuel- it will eat through ice and waxed/gelled fuel - because it contains alcohol.911 is not the additive to use as a preventive measure , only in emergency. It is better to use an anti-gell aditive/and or blend fuel before you need the 911.

One of my friends back in Nebraska works for the county highway department, their equipment absolutely has to run no matter how cold. He said NEVER used 911 formula or you will need pump work, but to use plenty of the Power Service white bottle. Another good additive is LUCAS. DOUG

Hello T.J.-N.J,
Just buy the fuel at a truck stop. The fuel is blended at the fuel rack, for the region by the oil companies. You can add antigel additive to the tank/s.
Low sulfur diesel is here to stay! I would blame a lot of the wear and stuck components to water first. Low sulfur = low lubricity, any water problem will accelerate and magnified wear.

I know. As I said in my first post, I use Diesel Supplement, not Diesel Kleen or Agri-Power. They are all three made by Power Service. I may switch to one of the last two for the added lubricity. My bottle of Diesel Supplement says nothing about added lubricity.

You are right. I stand corrected. It does say that it has "slickdiesel" and provides added lubrication. Thanks for replying. I guess I'm actually helping with lubricity after all.
