When instaling a lock set on a enterance door, I wonder how many of us know how to set the strike plate in regards to the to the little cylinder and the larger one. The parts that slides into the strike plate, on the jamb.

I'm cranking on this issue do to the post below on locking the office.

My experiance has been latley that locksets are made over in the famous country not known for quality.

We have had locksets fail after a few weeks of operation. Just had one the other day that was installed in November, and binds up already. We repaced it with a new one because the original was purchased at a big box store, and parts were not interchangable with our local brand names. Seems the original ones were about fourty dollars, can't remember for sure.

I would guess most locksets are installed incorectly?

Just installed one on Mothers garage this afternoon. I got a lever type instead of a knob as she had a stroke several years ago and can't grip a knob with her right hand. I think this lever will be easier for her.

The strike plate is set so that thethe door does'nt rattle when closed. The small round latch has to enter the strike plate as well since this keeps the main latch from being jimmied open by the boogie man.

Sorry, you done hit it 100% wrong with all due respect. Your perception is indeed accepted by 99% of the folks that install locksets.

So you understand in simple terms as best I can describe it, best just try this and see for yourself.

That small rod MUST NOT ENTER THE HOLE IN THE STRIKE PLATE. (notice there is no extra opening for it from the factory?) Open your door and take your finger to the larger cylinder and slap it in with ease. Now hold the small rod in...this would simulate it not entering the hole in the strike plate. Now try to push the large cylinder in! Use a hammer if you so choose, it will not depress, thus making it less apt to be opened with a credit card.

I have found almost 100% of the locks instaled as you suggested, thats why I posted this.

Now so we all know locking your front door is just a feel good ordeal we all accept. Yet more than likley it has a window in the door, or maybe we have other windows in our houses any way.

Sorry if I come across as a bad guy, I just feel this kind of stuff is interesting to many.
