Removing PTO extension on a farmall

I got this farmall 230 and it has a 6 inch PTO extension. I have to remove the extension to run my new post hole drill. It looks like there is a pin that needs knocked out thats running all the way through the middle but it almost looks like some internal self locking gizmo also. I beat on the pin and nothing happens. I dont want to screw up the PTO or the pin by beating on it with a punch and hammer.

I am about ready to get out the torch and burn it off.

Anybody know what I am dealing with here? Thanks!

Well I found out it is some kind of safety clutch for bush hogging and stuff. That explains the internals. And there definitely is a pin. I still need to get it off. How hard kin I wack on the pin with out bustin somethin in the gear case? Maybe hold a sledge on the back side or it for an anvil. Maybe I can drill it out if it aint hard.

I think the one I took off the fil's 4 wd tractor needed rotated until you can get the pin out..that was last year still fuzzy.its pretty simple when you figure it out (I'm a poor one to say that...cant even remember).we got an H that has one .....it adapts the small pto shaft to sae specs plus has the clutch.......I would take a better look and analyze it before getting brutal with it.. I dont have a need for one on my tractors....it does help on the small tractors brush hogging

thats what it was hillbilly....fil couldnt figure it out and it took me a few minutes ....

Guess my brain froze from all of this weather...

if what you have is a overrun clutch, remove both grease fittings and line up the hole with the pin inside and the pin should come out with little effort, put the big hammer away.....

Got it! Last night I soaked it again in wd40 and this morning and the outside was able to spin so I could line up the real hole I didn't know existed. Pin popped right out. Thanks!

any way now the real PTO shaft (not the clutch) has the indent farther in from the end of the shaft, and the sliding lock drive shaft coupling will not engage. So I have to put the clutch back on to get it to couple up.

Would that clutch make much difference on drilling in hard pan/soft rock? or is it mainly a bush hog thing?

Looks like I am going to have to shorten the drive shaft or weld new ears on the drill to get it farther from the tractor. Any Ideas?

UPDATE, I got the coupler on the normal PTO shaft (I guess there was a dirt ridge in it or something) So I am in business thanks to you all.

Question, would the clutch do any good on the 8" drill? Would this be a slip clutch or an anti reversal clutch?

(quoted from post at 19:52:47 01/23/09) it stops the bush hog from pushing your tractor after
you have pushed in the clutch,

I see. Thanks!, it probably would not do much for a drill. Anyway I had to hand dig a 2ft deep ditch along side a building yesterday through frozen compacted clay mixed with 3B limestone, and drilling holes in it first made it possible.

Thanks again for all the help.
