color of alternator

When converting a 6 volt to 12 volt with alternator , is it best to paint the alternator black or leave it the color of silver? Thanks Amo

How about painting a 12 volt GENERATOR the same color as the tractor and put that on instead?

if you must use an alt. i say leave it unpainted so it cool better.

It would never occur to me to paint an alternator black. Why did it occur to you?

Only problem I could see in painting it would be paint getting in to places you don't want it. Also might void any warranty that was on it

FWIW, the alternators on lots of new tractors simply got painted along with the tractor, and it didn't seem to hurt anything. Don't think it HELPED anything, either!

Very true but I also figure if it has a warranty like the ones I get that have lift time warranty's on them it might void that. But ya it would probably take a lot of paint in the wrong places to hurt one also

I usually hit them with clear urethane, it keeps the aluminum from oxidizing.

Alternator cases are aluminum. If you don't properly prepare and prime the case, paint isn't going to stick well. It hardly seems worth the aggravation.

Alternators dont stand the weather very well so color doesnt matter.
