M-M old torque converter question

Like the dog chasing cars I got one now don't know how to use it. The torque converter is from older M-M selfpropelled combine The thing says Thomas hydrolic control. Googled for info only found who maker was no info. I have been told as well as good torque converter a fellow can actually reverse direction with it. It's really heavy and lots of momentum when spinning. It's a new one on me if you can reverse direction with it.

It is simply a hydraulic pump that you restrict the outlet on to make the combine move... the more it is restricted by the control mechanism, the faster the combine moves.

You still have the standard mech transmission to chose the forward speed or reverse with.
