John Deere B 3rd Gear

Tim your tappered roller brgs on bottom shaft a bad this make gear wore on an angle and will push it shelf out of gear

Before throwing a new gear in there, there are a few things to take a look at. Take a look at your shift shafts. They are a straight rod with little detents for the pawls to fall into. The detent can become wore and allow the shifter to slide out. The pawls can become worn, or the spring can become weak that holds the pawl. Also make sure the left to right adjustment of the shift shaft is correct to allow the shifter/pawl to fall into place. Also I believe the bearing in the case for the lower countershaft can get some slop in it. This will allow the shaft to move a little and allow the assembly to walk out of gear. And as always, get yourself a manual or download it for free.

That was a common problem with both the A & B tractors. They did make a kit that was supposed to take care of the problem, and I say supposed. They did not take care of the problem. Dealer said wedge a piece of wood 1X2 in the quadrant so the stick pushes against that. Ran both a 49 B and a 51 A like that for years. The shaft has just enough flex in it that causes that, and a new shaft will not cure the problem.

This is probably not your problem and I'm comparing apples to oranges here, but my 630 used to work it's way out of fourth, if I remember right, when I had it on the cultivator for long hours. I shimmed the pawl spring, which just happened to be conveniently under a cap on top of the tranny case, and it hasn't jumped out since then. I could even hear the pawl click in after the shimming.

If the spring is strong and the shift rail is in good shape you should feel the pawl fall into the detent when the gearshift gets close to the end of it's travel in the quadrant. If you know what you're feeling for, you should be able to feel if the spring is weak or the detent is worn.

This may not be your problem but it's something that can be checked out in about a minute's time. Jim

(quoted from post at 20:54:28 01/14/09) The 3rd gear in my 1950 B jumps out. Would I need a new gear or what can I do?

Tim, does it kick out of 3rd gear (shifter actually moves), or does the tractor just stop moving and stick remains in 3rd gear?

You may already know this, but if it pops out while driving in 3rd gear, it will also pop out if you use the PTO in third gear. Our '49 B has been like that for over 30 years, we just avoid using 3rd gear.
