chevy truck idling problems

Was wondering if anyone on here could help. I have a 2002 chevy silvrado 5.3 engine that will not idle right in the cold weather. It only does it if the temp is below 50. when you first crank it up it idles up real high for a few seconds, then idles back down and continues to idle very rough. When the truck warms up the problem goes away. Also if you let it just set and idle while it is still cold, the service engine light comes on after a few seconds. have replaced coolant temp sensor, and idle air control valve. Any ideas?

First step is to see what code(s) set.Three things come to mind, but need to get codes scanned first.

My 87 S-10 does the same thing when its cold out. Dosent bother me a bit. I just check the fluids every 60-100 miles.

Mine is a few years older so I don't know if yours is equipped with the same thing. But mine has an EGR valve in the manifold which is sort of shaped like a 4 inch mushroom. they become plugged up down in the manifold/or go bad. in my case I could just unplug it {VACUUM LINE} and it runs just fine...that may create problems which the SERV. Engine light on the newer models though.

I would suspect your intake manifold gaskets are leaking vacuum when cold. Swapping the gaskets is not that big of a job. I would recommend GM gaskets, only theirs are made with a thicker bead to combat this.

buddy of mine just had that hapen to his, it is a emission sensor on it somewhere that goes bad, he has to replace his once a year. Only about 145.00 to thave the GM shop do it. the plug it in to there computer thingy and find which one it is, must be several of them on there and then they replace it. Good luck, Bob

Oxygen sensors have a habit of "sticking" sometimes during warmup. If the engine light goes out after a good warmup run you might consider seeing if a code has been set for that.

Forgot to say that Autozone will throw a scanner on your truck for free & tell you what codes have been set. If the Oxy sensor doesn't work right, it will alter your fuel mixture and make it run bad based on what it tells the computer. My 92' Ford used to flash the engine light on for a few minutes every time I drove it from about 5 minutes after I started it until it got good & warm. After replacing it twice the problem went away.
