Perfect tractor for rakingtedding??

Just wondered what you all think would make the ultimate tractor for raking and tedding? My main tractors are a 766 and 4020 both diesels and i'm looking for a smaller more efficient tractor. Both require hydraulics so that is a must.I'm looking at spending no more than 3500.00
So what do you guys think? Thanks

Mike

A 2020 Deere is a pretty reliable little tractor, but might still be a little more money than that. David Brown 885 or 990 maybe. Parts should be available through CaseIH. Pretty good on fuel. Don't know about the gearing on them, but I'd think they'd be geared right for those jobs.

I do both with 3010 diesels, they are very easy on fuel and very dependable tractors, only problem would be finding a good one for that money, but you never know

Yeah would def consider a M or an A as those are both great tractors. I was also looking at a few older olivers. How reliable are the 770 and 880 diesels and how are they on fuel. Would prefer a wide front as its kinda hilly around these parts! Thanks for the input!

Mike

Yes,there's an idea. Better than an H or M Farmall because they have better gearing for that kind of job. A lot of them had hydraulics. You could even go to a 1550 or 1600. I use a 1550 for raking. Like you said, smooth 6 cylinder power, not too bad on gas or diesel.

One thing I would look for is how much hydraulic pressure, and volume, you need to operate your rake and tedder. Most of the older tractors don't have enough hydraulic pressure to operate some of the newer equipment.

A lot depends on the size of the equipment you want to pull. A 77 or 88 Oliver are good tracks but might be a bit over kill for a rake. Some of the smaller tractors would do just fine also like say a Oliver Super 55 or one in that class

I'm an IH guy so I would say maybe a 300 or something like that (Hydraulics & IPTO) instead of an H or an M. You should be able to find a hundreds series machine in your budget.

Another tractor that I've always been fond of the AC WD45s. I don't own one but I always thought they were a pretty complete tractor.

I like to use our Oliver 1600- It's pretty good on gas- I run it in 5th or 6th gear and idle it down.

The old 454/574 IH's were real nice on the rake and tedder. Cheap on fuel and reliable as all get out. Till they broke down. Then we bought new stuff. Then it broke down. Then the $hitting hay got rained on anyway. So, ah, you know, ah, it's gonna rain anyway so get whatever makes you happy.

jd b burns between a half and three quarters of a gallon of fuel an hour plowing late models had hydraulics and optional 3 pt hitch usually find them for under $2000 can buy after market 3 pt for $600

I"ve raked a lot of hay with my Ford 2N. 2nd gear, high range(Sherman Step-up), half throttle works fine. Very easy on gas.

30hp is enough for raking and tedding, might even get away with an even smaller tractor. Any brand will do, it doesn't really matter just as long as it can lift/lower the machinery. Make sure you know what you want for equipment first, because you might need a remote for a hydraulic fold tedder for example.

You need to talk to Thurlow before you do anything. He's a world class expert on matching the right tractor to the right job.

I'm suprised no one has mentioned the MF 135 family, I use a 240 Massey (newer version of 135) the 152 perkins diesel uses very little fuel, 8 speed, live PTO, I run a Kuhn GF-22N 3pt 2 rotor tedder, high 1st at PTO rpm or less, rake with a 256 NH rolabar, High 1st or 2nd part throttle depending on the ground. Tractor turns very short with out brakes, very light and nimble.

I don't need remotes for what hay gear I run on it, but could easily fit if I wanted to run hyd fold rake or tedder

I don't know that I'd go that phar. I tend to be opinionated and dephinitely have some thoughts. I never owned a Pharmall, though my Phather had a couple of 'H' models way back when. I have also put a lot of hours on Massey-Phergusons and John Deeres...........Did I ever tell you about the Deutz-Phhar tedder we had?

I pull a NH 256 rollabar behind a MF 135 p
ulling in 2 gear high multi power a little over idle. I have a 3 pt 8 wheel sirtrex that I occasionaly use behind the MF 1085 or IH 966 because it is so heavy.

what size rake and tedder are you pulling? Most any of the 40 hp tractors or even the older 30 hp should do the job. As someone said hydraulic pressure is a factor although I have pulled our rake with a 720 JD LPG and it actually works to rake faster than our newer tractors do.

pick a brand you like and something that you can get parts for easy and close and go from there.

77 Oliver is good. A B john Deere. maybe a 300 400 series farmall. red belly fords like the 800-900 series or newer are good. heck any brand will work.

I'm kinda partial to Deere and Oliver, We got a 3020 LPG for $3500 this summer and use the heck out of it. Real easy on fuel believe it or not for LP and since it's alot cheaper than diesel now....

Gas 3020's seem to use more fuel or the one we have does. If you don't have alot of hills a narrow front turns real short and usually never have to hit the brakes.

Want to really save on fuel? Get you two big ole horses and a pull rake. You will save on gas or diesel that way. .... Now might take you a bit longer to get the job done. But what the heck! You might have lots of time on hand and looking for something to do.
But if your real busy man. Teach the wife to handle them and you go have something cold to drink while your watching her. *S

We have a 48 B we pull a old 4 bar JD rake with,I believe it's a 740.Rake all day in 5 th gear and a tank of gas.

Hey guys thanks for all the input! I currently have a 4 wheel ground driven Vicon rake with hyrdaulic lift and a New Idea 18ft tedder with hydraulic fold. Im think i'm leaning towards maybe an Oliver like an 88 or 770 or a JD 50 or an A. Just getting ready to spend my tax return money before my woman gets any crazy ideas!

At work i rake with a farmall H or M and a JD 60. Sometimes we use the 4010 and 20 but ususally the farmalls we usually rake with 3 tractors at a time because we cut 30 acres at a time. dad rakes with an Allis WD-45 or JD B. bth about perfect for raking. all are good for raking. i usually perfer someting with a widefront. also a Massy 44 or 33 would be good for raking too
M puller

My favorites are DC ,SC,800 CASE tricycles , They are all 4 cylindar ,fuelsippers , sit up out of the heat and dust and have 38 in wheels ,, Takes the rough feilds without boucing your back ,..I like using the wide front 430 with 2 rakes,Farm boyed in Tandem ,,
Least favorite is a Yanmurry 2022,SmallWheels , Rough ride , Engine heat Will Roast you Worse than any Massey or Ford Low style design in the Summer Heat . The Latter models are Good for Winter wheat planting . yanmar is best kept around the barn for yard work .
WD Allis are a cool enuf ride , But you sit LOp legged on the old Gal ,I never cared for runnin one over 4 hrs at a time ,, OK Tractors and they are fun to drive and quiet like the gasser Cases
To each His Own , I have run 50 yr old JD and IHC, good dependable as anything out there ,.However Personally ,I like my steering wheel to be pitched at a angle rather than the thumb breaking Straight up Steering most the H,M, and JD,A,50 and 60 . My 2 cents, jim

Forgot to mention a Fun tractor to rake with here on the farm .. the 49 VAC, Has a ft Throttle and When , hand throttle set moderate to low side in 4th gear with mild hills there is plenty of power and gas left over after you finish raking , handles rake and teddar as well as the SC.
Never could figure why anyone would want to use any tractor that weighed over 3 tons , and had a 6 cylindar motor to rake or ted hay. too much wasted energy and unecessary compaction.

Yes ,And ,I bet the Perkins Diesel is a cool ride compared to the Gasser Ford and Fergusons . Always wanted a Diesel. I ran Gassers 25Years ago , Those tractors had under exhaust FUMES that tend to get the best of You on a Hot LONG day , And will set a windrow on fire ,, Guess How I know ? .. But They ARE good on Gas .And Dependable , And You Could Skid Turn on a dime with a 3 pt Rake .

Best raking tractors? 430 or 530 Case diesel. You cannot beat them. You might be able to find a good one for $3500.00. I have one of each. Would never part with them.

We pull a 10 wheel rake and a four section tedder with a 1953 Allis Chalmers WD-45. Did have to change the hydraulics on the tractor though. Now has two outlets, instead of the original one. We mounted new hydraulic levers on the fender and use the original, one hydraulic lever, to turn on and off the hydraulic pump. Its a pretty good setup, works for me anyways. Not to mention the 3.7 litre 4 cylinder 226ci motor, dont use much gas.

Just for curiosity I hooked my four wheel tedder to my 8N ford one time. It was heavy hay. I only went about 30 ft. forward and totally used ALL of its little balls.
