Just wanted to know who here has had joint replacement surgery. I am scheduled to have a total hip replacement on wednesday. Let me hear the good and the bad. Thanks.

Full hip replacment nov 1999. Use the pain meds to get going. then wean off as soon as you can do what the say. Was sitting up on the edge of the bed that afternoon and walking nonweight berring for 6 months now only have a 25lb weight lift restricion.

My dad has had both knees replaced over the last 25 years, he's doing fine with them. Mom had her first one replaced 4 months ago. She's doing good too. they are both 81 now.

I read years ago that the hip was the easiest joint to replace and the shoulder was the hardest. The shoulder has a lot more motion involved as compared to the hip.

Seen a lot of my uncles with knee and hip replacements and you can tell which ones didn't do their exercises as they were told to do. So be sure to do them.

Dad had both of his replaced. The only problem he experienced was due to his age and physical strength. They had him in physical therapy the next day with the first one but the second one four years later took a lot longer in physical therapy and was more painful for him. They glued the new hip replacement into a tapered bore in his femur both times because at his age they did not think the bone would grow on the new hip pin. The worst pain came during the first 12 to 24 hours. He fell when the first one was about three years old and bent the metal hip so he walks kinda funny from that but otherwise no lasting effect.

Find a surgeon that does the mini surgery not near as invasive. Walking in 3 days. If I didn't have the x-ray would not know I had the second one replaced.
First one a different story. Three months recovery and still have pain most of the time.

My mother had both hips replaced six months apart last year. It has made her life so much better at 92. When I take her places she will not let me get the car door for her. Before the replacements she had to be helped in and out of a car. She had to set in a lift chair to be able to get up to shuffel to the bath room. Last fall she cleaned her basement that she had not been able to go down to for several years.

My Dad has had both hips, both knees, and as of last month, one shoulder done. A big part in how sucessful it is depends on you doing your physical therapy. Hips are an easier recovery than shoulders, maybe somewhat easier than knees.

I had my right knee done in October of 2007. I was 37. I went into surgury at 3pm, was in a room at 7pm and was walking on it at 9pm with a walker. I used a walker the first day, one crutch the second and a cane thereafter for about a month. I could walk without the cane after about a week, but the therapist said to use it anyways so I could learn to walk without limping. Big thing is do your exercises and PT. One week after I had it done I was on the M, two weeks after I helped the vet castrate calves, five weeks after I went bowling. Now I can even run on it if I really want to. I would definitly do it again. I never looked back and said why did I do that. Now no one can tell there was ever anything wrong, and I limped quite bad for over fifteen years. Good luck, everything will turn out fine.

I have not, but four friends have.

Advise is wear silk pajamas so you can slide yourself with less resisance.

Get a beach towel and use it to sling your legs to manuver them.

Get a hearing aid to listen well to doctors orders about using it again (schedule).

All four wonder why they put it off.

Good luck

One other thing that is most important is to prepare the wife with candy, flowers, and expensive jewlery---and the promise of more to come after recovery.

Well, at least thank her for her help real often.

I've had a half a dozen knee surgeries. Not got a joint replaces yet but put in a couple of hundred trips to physical therapy. What I learned from my first knee surgery and no one told me was to start flexing your quad muscle the minute you start coming around from the anesthesia. Any time your knee swells beyond a certain point your body starts attacking that muscle *neurological atrophy). Your knee will be all braced up but you have got to start using that muscle ASAP or you forget how. Took me almost a month to learn how to tighten it up again after the first surgery. If you can keep it working, even a little, it makes PT go a lot better. The other thing is dont be afraid to take as much pain med as you need early on. I tried to tough it out with morphine and percoset. It wasnt getting it. Finally, I admitted to the nurse how bad it was and they added oxycontin to the mix. I only needed it for a couple of weeks, but it made all the difference in getting better.

I had my R. hip replaced in 1995 & never looked back! The pain was gone & I could sleep again!!
Be sure to do your physical therapy to hasten the recovery.
Best wishes .

I see that someone has beat me in number of joints replaced but not for long. I have had both knees and both shoulders replaced all in the last seven years. I'll be 77 here not too long. It is mt opinion that the doctor makes the difference in recovery. The first knee was done and took me 3-4 months to walk really good. The both shoulder and other knee were done by a different Dr and recovery time was in weeks, not months. I have a son who is an orthopedic surgeon and he says the Dr. is the most important thing. After the first knee I had him find me a Dr he thought was best and it worked out so much better. Shoulders were the least problem for me. Really research you Dr. and always get a second opinion. Most insurances cover 2nd opinions. Henry

My Dad had both knees replaced in 1980 at age 68. He did his physical therapy rigorously, and was climbing on top of the grain bins 2 months later. He farmed another 18 years and abused those new joints by carrying bags of seed corn, moving augers, and playing touch football with his grandkids! He passed away at age 89, with no additional knee problems.
Mother had both of her knees done a few years later, did not follow the therapist's advice, and never walked really well after that.
Get a good doctor, do your exercises, and enjoy your mobility!

When the old joint gets down real small where it burns your fingers and no roach clip then its time for a new one,be sure to roll tight on both ends so you don't loose any.Hope to get the country on the Gold standard Colombian style

Mine WAS scheduled for next Monday, but last Tuesday I spent my 65th birthday in two hospitals. Started the pre-op, VA said the EKG was questionable, they sent me by ambulance to another hospital. That Dr. thought the next EKG was ok. Thursday I finished the pre-op in another clinic, and that Dr.would not certify me until I pass another stress test. Last one was 5 years ago, next one will also be the chemical kind, since I might fall off the treadmill. Just hoping that all is done and healed by Spring work. Yesterday's mail brought the notice from the insurance supplement that coverage starts next month, even though I signed on late in Dec. Agent didn't get the paperwork to the office in time, so no coverage right now. And the doc wonders why the high BP?

My brother has one leg shorter than the other. He's going to have a hip replaced in two weeks. Doctor
said they would take care of the short leg too.

Chris, I have had both shoulders operated on....Total, Complete Replacement, I did my right shoulder 3-26-08, My left 12-10-08. The principal is the same, saw off the ball, drive in a steel shank with a steel ball offset to the side to fit in a new recepitale. Best thing since sliced bread, pocket on a pair of wranglers jeans!
At times they feel different and I know that is hard to describe to someone who hasn't had a joint replaced. DO Not Hurt just feel different, especislly when s front is comming through.
Go For It!! My Mom had both knees done at one time she did well with hers. She was 75 yrs old at the time! The Knee will do amazing things ie it will exchange pain @ rehab for limberness and degree of refraction past a 90 degree bend. Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

I talked with a man who had a hip replacement. He was waiting on tables at the Farmington moving around well.He said he was in a wheel chair before the hip replacement.A friend had both knees done and is doing fine He was bowlegged and very slow when walking,After the replacement his legs are straight and he walks faster than me.I saw xrays of his new knees, lot of metal spliced into the leg bones.
