Typing a little slower

I was cutting fire wood with my chain saw around noon today. I was holding the small limbs with one hand while cutting.(BIG MISTAKE) I knew better, but it was faster. My saw chain snagged the branch, and spun around, and sonehow managed to shread the under side of my left index finger. The emergency doctor waw able to sew some of the skin back together. He said the missing part will fill in, over time. that's how I spent my afternoon. Hope you guys had a better afternoon than that. Pray for a speedy recovery for me. Thanks Stan

Funny you should mention that. I just pulled the same stunt with an axe today.

Sure hope this swelling and throbbing goes away. I gotta work a room tomorrow. :>(

Take care of yourelf. Don't worry about typing slow. Some of these guys can't read too fast anyway....

Hind sight 20-20 in most cases. several years experience tend to make a fellow less cautious.

I do stupid things like this my self taking gambles that I could loose in the end.

Posts like this makes a guy think and the next time will maybe a little more cautious.

Prayers are sent to the both of you for speedy recovery.

we'll keep ya in our thoughts stan, them injuries are a bugger to heal. got my finger caught in a dewalt skilsaw couple years ago, took 3 months to heal. lot of doctor bills, but managed to save the finger.

I did something similar with a axe a couple years ago. I swung it one handed at a sucker growing out of a stump, it bounced off and hit me in the knee.

Been fightin' a frozen tank all day long. Just got it runnin' good just before dark and thought I'd give 'er two more swipes............

Shoulda quit while I was ahead, I guess. :>)

Stan, With your bad finger you are probably still typing faster than I can. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I just got a cast take off my left arm yesterday after breaking it and my wrist in 3 places in november. I took a stupid chance on a 6ft step ladder. I climber ladders and bins regularly so 6ft was nothing. I now have a plate screwed in my wrist to remind not to do it again. Be careful, these things only take seconds to do, but way longer to get fixed.

I hope you know that farming is #5 on the list for the top most dangerous jobs. I do my part to keep us up there but sure wouldn't want anyone else to follow me.
Walt

PS next time a fireman or policeman tells you how dangerous his job is, ask him where he is on the list.
Actually there not.

Get Well Soon!!!

I think ill wear gloves from now on.
I was wire wheeling something on the bench grinder the other day and wasnt watching where my right hand was, just watching the hammer on the left wire wheel side. Heard this GIRRRT noise and yanked my hand back to notice part of the glove tore up. I could be missing part of the back of a finger right now......

I'll bet it's really throbbing tonight and you're holding it up kinda high. Here's best wishes for a quick recovery and a quick end to the throbbing too. Jim

Always hold the saw with 2 hands!!! Brother of mine cut his finger just like you 37. Was reaching with his hand for something. Ran over a thousand dollars in medical bills with stitches and x rays to check tendons. Was not wearing gloves. He still hasnt sold enough wood to make up for the medical bills. Insurance didnt pay for that, being self employed. I sure took the lesson to heart and you will too now, always wear GLOVES, HEARING PROTECTION, EYE GLASSES, STEEL TOED BOOTS, CHAPS FOR LEGS. Remember... every "accident" on the farm is a stupid one.. not taking precautions.. doing something with motors on or somehow placing someone in danger carelessly

well i haven't done anything stupid for a while, but about 8 years ago i was ripping some wood on a table saw and cut the ends off 2 fingers, i think had 23 stitches put in, they looked like hamburger for a couple months, and still look kinda weird.hope yours heal fast and good luck

Stan - If your're feeling better in the morning I've Stehl got some more to cut. Just kiddin. Hope you recover quickly.

PS: You still probably type better than I can!

I was thinking if I had gloves on, the saw might have climbed the gloven to something a little worse, like my wrist with the veins. You just never know. Stan

Stan,

I almost lost my left ring finger on 2004 luckily a hand specialist in St. Louis was able to reattach it. It was still mostly intact but not by much.

I was taking the rear hub off of a Farmall H tractor when it slid off the axle sooner than I expected. It fell to the ground and leaned into the axle with my finger between the hub and axle. I heard it snap, sounded like a twig breaking. I spent 3 1/2 days in the hospital and suprisingly it never hurt once or throbbed. I was off work for 9 weeks. I thought I would never clap my hands again but it takes time. Had no feeling in it for 6 weeks then for the 7th & 8th week feeling started coming back. That was irritating felt like a thousand needles sticking it. I kept up the exercise I was told to do and it all helped. After two weeks of wearing a splint on it they told me to take if off and keep it off. That was scary going with out the splint especially after only two weeks. My finger isn't exactly like it use to be but I'm still proud to have it.
I hope your recovery is a fast one!

Here's a picture of my finger's x-ray after the operation. The bone between the first two knuckles was in 5 pieces. Three pins and a wire held it together until it healed.

Somewhere out there is an ambulance chaseing attorney waiting for you to call!

That is why our medical system is so screwed up, lawyers. Shoot 'em all!!

Reading this thread serves as gentle reminder as to why women live longer than men! Be careful all the time.

Father in law cut off left index finger at first knuckle many years ago, he is a carpenter. A coulpe of years ago he cut he left middle finger at the first knuckle. He made one of his employees ride with him to the hospital, not drive him to the hospital, ride with him!! When he got to the emergency room the doctors said it was too mangled to reattach. He said try anyhow because he couldn't hold a nail with his ring finger. They sewed it back on and it's been fine ever since.

Mike my uncle Bob did that when I was in school, he said that darn thing was always in the way of his hammer anyway. He was a Carpenter and was at one time the youngest man in Calif, to hold a contractors license.

He taught me a lot about building ahouse and it has come in very handy in later years.

the chainsaw gods must have been angry today. Big limb fell off neighbors tree & we went over to make firewood. The limb pinned a branch from another tree to the ground. In cutting the live branch free, I saw it would flip up & stood back & cut it. Didn't allow for the 'springpole' effect & the arc took the cut-off branch into my head, giving my hardhat a mighty wallop & knocking it across the yard. Wear them. They work. Prolly would've knocked me cold if not on.

Stan;

Hope everything heals okay. It's always sobering to read other's accidents. Hopefully, it makes us all a little more careful--at least for a while. Our house is so well insulated my wife can't hear the saw 100 yards away. Hope I never need to call for help.

Chief; I have found threw the years that the slower I go the quicker I get things done ! The longer time between doing these actions gives me more time to think about the what if's ?

Hope everything is okay with you -- If I started telling of all the safety mishaps I have made it would make this forum look like a "jokes" forum instead. I am alot more safety minded these days. jim

37chief,

Hope everything heals for you. Agree with what Jim in NY said below about going slower and taking time.

I have hurt myself many times, and the majority of them have been because I was either in a hurry or cutting corners.

As I get older I might be getting just a little wiser.

Rick
