Massey 135 question

I recently bought my 1st tractor and I got a Massey 135 diesel. I wanted to check my antifreeze level in the radiator, but when I removed the cap I notice it curves forward inside and I do not see any antifreeze. Hopefully I just need to add some, but how do I know when it is full? Also someone told me to buy "normal" Preston antifreeze and it is fine for tractors. Is this correct?? Any help will be appreciated as I'm new to tractors and do not know much about them.

if I fill my radiator full enuf to actually see the level, coolant blows out the overflow when the tractor gets good and warm thereby reducing the level so you can't see it anymore, jsut how it works

stick a rubber tube down in there and I bet you will find coolant, should be enuf to test with Prestone tester, green is old faithful coolant

Diesels can turn coolant acidic. Check PH OR drain and replace every few years. Other than that, ordinary antifreeze will work just fine in a Perkins diesel.

Fill radiator until you see coolant plainly visable over the top of core/tubes. That's about 1" to 1-1/2" from top of tank.

Sounds good. One more question though is I bought the concentrate coolant instead of the 50/50. Which mixture do you guys recommend. 70/30,50/50???

I also wanted to ask what pressure you run in your back tires. I think this has 12 PSI with water and antifreeze in them. Is that too high? The back tires have dry rot bad, but I'm hoping to use them until I have to buy new ones.

I ussually mix it 50/50. Buy a gallon of distilled water and mix it with your gallon of antifreeze. Then you have 2 gallons of mixed.

Of course, the ratio depends on how cold it gets, so that's up to your climate.

For the back tires, that sounds about right. As long as the trwad makes full contact with the ground and doesn't squat too much they're good. I can't say we've ever checked any of our rear tractor tires w/ a guage, just go by eye and sometimes we need to adjust for plowing etc.

You'll be surprised how long those rotten tires will run yet. Unless the tube is showng, run 'em. If any fluid shows up around the valve stem, fix it now or replace the rim later. Guys complain about how corrosive the fluid is, but they never do the prevenative maintnance to save the rim.

MF 135 D was one of the first tractors I ever drove. Nice 40 hp tractor. I always thought is was neat how the pedals pivoted from the rear instead of the front like most tractors. I have a Perkins 4.108 in my Kid 8x8.

"I recently bought my 1st tractor and I got a Massey 135 diesel."

Kinda like saying "My first girlfriend was Cindy Crawford."

Sounds normal, check to make sure the fins are covered, but aside from that, these models do not have a catch can, so the top tank becomes the surge tank/reservoir.

I overfilled mine several times before I figured out that it just ran like that.

Congrats on the 135,

Aaron

Congrats on the MF, one of the finest. Now, do yourself and your MF a real favor, and purchase 3 real MF manuals through your local MF dealer: 1. Operator Manual 2. Repair Manual 3. Parts Manual. Best money you ever spent. Most old tractors finally get taken out of running by abuse caused by not having the manuals and following them when doing maintenance and repairs. Tom

If it gets real cold where you are, you could go to a 60/40 or 70/30 antifreeze mix. 12 PSI is the correct pressure for 14.9 x 24 tires. You will be happy with your new super model...tractor. Dave

Regular antifreeze is formulated to be mixed 50/50. If you go with a "richer" mix, it actually raises the freezing point. Mix it equally with distilled water, and you will have the maximum protection. HTH.
Good Luck and God Bless.
