OT: Proposed Flatulence Tax on Farms

Here's a rather lengthy article on a proposed tax on the "greenhouse gas" emissions from livestock and more.

Here's a clip from the article:

"Writing for the Business & Media Institute in December 2008, Jeff Poor cited evidence in the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) “Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking” report that demonstrates the EPA is open to the idea of levying “a tax on livestock.” More specifically, they are open to the idea of taxing livestock flatulence.

According to Poor’s research: “The tax for dairy cows could be $175 per cow, and $87.50 per head of beef cattle. The tax on hogs would upwards of $20 per hog…[and] any operation with more than 25 dairy cows, 50 beef cattle or 200 hogs would have to obtain permits” to continue doing business."

Be forewarned.
Flatulence Tax

I still don't know what to make of this. Some people say it's for real, others say it's just something that was floated out there that was never really a serious consideration. I guess things like this is why we pay dues to Farm Bureau and NCBA.

I am being told it is a real proposel, even a few of the big one hour news specials programs talked about it. All I can say is with the way the non farm citizens are going, goofy green, those of us that have critters have better dial every darned representative whose number we can get a hold of, AND get as many folks we can to do the same. Us gripping and sniveling on here about it isnt gonna make a snot of difference. Also, remember this, how many of these "taxes" have ever went away or decreased, it will be like all other "taxes", as more cash is wanted for whatever, they will increase the tax. How long before a cow/calf operation is paying 80% of the profit from that calf to a "emissions" tax. If they are serious about this, they should look at helping farmers manage manure and it's gases, pay us to install a methane digester and then pay us for the cheap electricity.

What about the other 90% of the world's cattle population that is outsside the U.S.? Is this a "WORLD" tax?

How does charging a tax reduce the cattle farting?

Gordo

You guys are going about this all wrong. Capture the methane while the cows are in the barn and sell it!

Apply for government grants to develop the equipment. Hook the methane tank to a small generator and market it as a device to reduce our dependence on foreign oil by powering battery chargers that are plugged into a vehicle.

This would drag on forever once the regulators get involved.

It's the Farm Bureau that floats this crap. The EPA only expained that the current law doesn't work BECAUSE if the follow the letter of the law they would have to tax cows. That's all. The EPA is the one who brought this to attention but the stupid Farm Bureau is taking advantage of this because what they are really after is to stop country of origin labeling. Then if there is country of origin labeling the Farm Bureau wants it to be paid for by the individual farmer not the meat packers. The Farm Bureau is, has always been, and will always be on the side of the large corporate farmers and meat packers. Something like 87% of Farm Bureau members are non farmers. Who do you think they are going to bat for? The lowly independent farmer? That's a laugh!

Join the NFO or Farmers Union if you insist on joining an ag group.

Yea,like I haven't ever had any experience with the NFO! What a half @ssed slip shod organization THAT is. I can't WAIT to join an organizition that would sue a member for not paying their dues after they scr*wed said member out of a WHOLE BUNCH of money on a commoditity deal. You'd better wake up when it comes to THOSE crooks. We doubled the size of our milk route in 1974 when NFO closed their plant without notice and shafted all of their shippers out of the last 5 days milk. Then they bought the local elevator and went through everybody elses an*l cavity.

If this CRAP, let me rephrase, COTTINPICKIN RETARD GENERATED INSANITY gets passed or put into place....I might quit and move to Canada. Problem is, the canooks will (at least) should be smart enough to close the border because who would want anyone from a country who is so dang dumb to come up with such an idea??? This kinda crap (if true) is the line of thinking that continues to drive this country into what it is becoming...A SOCIETY RAN BY THE "DOGOODERS" WHO DONT HAVE A REMOTE CLUE WHAT THEY ARE DOING!!!
GOOD GREIF....

Just saying you'd be better off than with the Farm Bureau. I personally don't belong to any but am considering joining the Land Stewardship (not sure of name). They have gotten a bad rap too cause they are labeled as radicals but really the ones I know of are just regular farmers. Very small though.

I would just take the time to really look into an organization before you join them if I was you. If they are the type to scare you into belonging by berating other organizations,I'd move on.

Bill-KCKs,
A fine is a tax for doing wrong.
A tax is a fine for doing well.

No point comming here - we'll have the same Tax as soon as you do. Maybe it's the First Move to Tax Food.
Why do you think the polititions go on those junkets that they need more Tax $$$ for, to learn how to slide in a new Tax with little or no resistance.
ie) our top OPP cop wanted to charge everyone that went off the road in bad weather, and they would be responsible for all damages not the Ins. Co. and loose points.
The Idea was you were going too fast for the road conditions, well on Black Ice any Movement could be considered too fast.

If they ever get around to taxing my Flatulence. I am in big trouble.
I like chilly dogs but they dont like me.

Wife always says I am full of it. And she might be right.

Boys we are going to be in a world of hurt for some time to come.

external_link with a Dem congress and senate.. external_links going to be telling us. " I only want to help you. As he pats our backs with one hand and removes our wallets with the other.
Bushes wacky spending was bad enough. now its just going to get silly.

Don't know. Any Farm Bureau meeting I've ever been to,they were taking care of business, not talking about what somebody else was doing. It was the same way with Michigan Milk Producers Association. We took care of business. Independant Milk Producers was an offshoot of MMPA,a bunch of disgruntled members who went off on their own. Any time you talked to members of that organization, they were obcessed with what MMPA was doing.

The Farm Bureau is by far and away the largest farm lobby and they get their way time and time again. If the status quo suits you then stick with them. I'd like to see a whole lot of changes and it's not going to get done IMO by the FB. Sometimes you gotta grab the bull by the horns and if that means joining a so called loud mouth group then that's what I'll do. Sheep or tail blazer.

The fart tax idea has been around for 25 years. The fart tax would wipe out most 100 cow farms. My Border Collie pup can out fart any cow Ive had.
