Reason I'm asking is my wife will be in the Houston area for a week or so with not much to do and would like to see some stuff. the wish list is the AQHA Hall of Fame, King Ranch, visit some folks in Clifton, and maybe see a Rodeo. Any ideas? Any place to stay away from? A lot of driving for one person but she's hard headed.

Thanks, Dave

Hi Dave 2, Sorry, I am to far from Houston to tell you what are the hot spots down there.. (200 miles) north ..... I live between Corsicana and Waco in a little town called Hubbard .... The only time I was around Houston is when I was a kid going thru to go to the coast to go fishing ..
Sorry for the lack of information.... Larry

The AQHA Hall of Fame would be a bit of a trip from Houston. It is located in Amarillo. As for a rodeo is you are around Mesquite (DFW area) she should be able to see one there, every Saturday night I believe. Ft Worth Stockyards is always a good sight to see also.

No biggy... Not too crazy about her galavanting around by herself, but you cant tell her anything.

She mentioned the Stockyards too. Is the area safe enough?

Dave 2 , If you are wanting to do some travaling , the Ranger muesem in Waco is suppose to be a good place to visit and the river walk in San Antonio is nice (gone there as a kid) ... and Sea World is a great place to see... But I am not sure if its seasonal or not ... Larry

Keep em comin'. Trying to put together plenty of possibilities to map out and keep her from wearing herself out driving. I won't be with her, she bought a horse that will be quarantined outside Houston before it can fly to Germany. Part of the transportation deal is she gets a RT ticket also so she can fly back with it. Don't want her to hang out and be a flunky at the quarantine station so sending her a week or so early so she can see a little. Sea World is old news, but anything Rodeo, horse, or museum oriented interests her. Just don't want her to get her throat cut while visiting.

I'm in the San Antonio area. Big tourist destination. Riverwalk,
Institute of Texan Cultures, tons of stuff to see and do. If you come
don't get a hotel/motel on the eastside of town. But that's still
almost 200 miles from Houston.

Last time I was in southern Texas (1985), the motels were advertising rooms with a two hour rate. I have been in over half of the states and not noticed that before.

I grew up about an hour outside of Houston. Brenham is west of Houston about an hour and has Blue Bell Ice Cream factory. She can take a tour of that. 15 min west of there is the oldest working cotton gin in Burton 77835 (cottonginmuseum.org) Dr. Pepper museum is also in Waco. It is interesting. Texas A&M University is a sight to see in itself. She should go take a campus tour. Lot's of history since 1876.

I've been around the Amarillo and Borger area a little a long time ago(1990). If any of you are ever around Amarillo during Christmas season, you would likely enjoy the Bishop Hills Christmas light/decoration displays. Also if you are in Amarillo or in the area, I'd highly reccomend you stop at the Big Texan steakhouse just off I 40. I didn't try the 72oz. steak challenge though, I knew I wouldn't win.

dave2, I am about 50 mile N of Austin, Halfway between Lampasas and Georgetown, Lets visit about sites for your wife to visit......Sounds like your wife will be in Houston just prior the te Houston Stock Show and Rodeo, But if she is here at that time don't miss it.
Since she is in Houston proper lets stay close..
1 Moody Gardens @ Galveston quite a place to visit. It was started by the Moody Family original owners of American National Ins Co. there in Galveston.
2 Johnson Space Center...."Houston! We have a problem" Our Space industry was ran from here!!
3 God, Forbid you or your loved ones need Cancer Treatment,.... M.D. Anderson there in Houston. People come from the 4 corners of the World to M.D. Anderson for cancer treatment. OBTW My MIL is a 3yr survivor now from M.D.A. When she was there My wife and FIL met folks from California Penn. England, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia. Cars with plates from every state in the Union were in the parking lots.
4 A short 60 mile or so drive up US 290 to Brenham, Tx. Home of Blue Bell Creamery,,, Blue Bell Ice Cream. Open Mon thru Fri. Take the tour, The day I was there, they were making Cookies & Cream ice Cream. The Guy in the back of the mixing room was opening up OREO cookie packages and dumping them into the mixer Yes OREO cookies Not some off brand of cookie.
5 Since you are @ Brenham swing over to College Station take a tour of "The Little School across the Brazos" Texas A&M. More Military grads come out of TAM than any other institution.
6 Some of the others spoke of going to Waco see the Texas Ranger Museum, and the Dr Pepper Museum too. One of the oldest Ins. Co. on the state is at Waco too American Amicable est in 1890. The Am Am building has "ALICO" on the top of it, Also it is the tallest in downtown Waco, OBTW when the Tornado of 1953 hit Waco and just about wiped Waco off the face of the map it was the only building left standing downtown. It sets just west of I-35 in down town Waco.
Your folks @ Clifton can help with other points of interest when she gets there. Hope this helps.

Not sure of how much driving she wants to do.....

But, here goes: I would recommend she travel West to San Antonio and see the Alamo and River Walk and then travel North to Austin and see the State Capitol and some of the old Spanish Missions that are still in the area. There is also a lot of Tourist stuff between the two cities.
From there, I would go North to Waco and see the Texas Rangers Museum. She can then return back to Houston or go A little further North on I35W and see the FortWorth Stockyards (the Ft. Worth Zoo is excellent also).
Then go East on I30 to Dallas and see the down town area where the Kennedy Memorial is and the West End area (the Dallas Aqarium is Excellent also).
Then she can head strait back to Houston on I45 South. She will thru the Woodlands, which is very scenic. While in the Houston area she may want to see the NASA area and go South to see Galveston Moody Gardens. However, the area is still tore up from the Hurricane so she may not want to see the destruction. Moody Gardens is a neat destination.

You can do a search for each of the areas listed and see what each has to offer as additional tourist locations.

The whole trip will be somewhere around 700-800 miles and will give her a good view of the diverse landscape of Texas: Hill Country, Plains, Piney Woods and the Gulf Coast. The only parts she would miss would be the High Plains area out in West Texas. That may be a bit far for 1 week.

If she planned 1 major area per day she could see all of this and only drive 150-200 per day. Book in good hotels and she should be in decent areas and reasonably safe. Good Luck!

dave2, 200cs has a very good plan. When she is in Waco she is just a short distance away from Clifton. Also is Waco is the Dr. Pepper museumn. Most people don't realize that it takes almost 16 hours (75mph) to drive from one side of Texas to the other(n to s or e to w).
Houston to Dallas/Ft. Worth is about 4 hours same as the Houston to San Antonio drive. Most of the real beauty in Texas is in the small towns and the rural areas. Great difference in all the parts of Texas but much too much driving to do in just a week.

Houston is just like any other big city in the US, be alert at all times, don't leave anything in plain sight in the car while it is parked, park in a well lighted, active area.

Last but not least, enjoy the food. Tex-Mex, BBQ, seafood(Houston is a major seaport)and a good steak, all things not to be missed.

I live on the west side of Houston in Katy and have a small ranch in Schulenburg, about 90 mi west of Houston on the way to San Antonio.

Thanks! I'm listing all suggestions, mapping and will hit her with them. I guess I should be asking where she should stay away from.
Keep em comin'.
