starting problems

Have just acquired this 9n tractor recently(first one). It had been sitting in a barn for 2-3 years with a new overhaul with about 50 hours on it when it was parked. I got it running and it does run fine. Now heres the problem. I've run it around here about 10 hrs. When I go to start it (cold or warm ) the starter is spinning but the engine is not turning over. I put a new bendix on it, though the original looked just fine and it does the same thing, I know it is engaging, I 've checked that. I borrowed another starter from a friend ,put it on,and it does the same thing.I have a new battery. My starter..and the borrowed starter works just fine. Just tell me what to check next, doesn't make any sense to me. ,. I KNOW IT'S ENGAGING. its a 6 volt.Could it be a bad ground ?

I'm confused. It's engaging? You mean the bendix is going into the ring gear on the flywheel or the starter is spinning? As in "electrically" engaging? I don't understand how the starter could be spinning with the bendix engaged in the ring gear unless the ring gear was spinning on the flywheel?

If the small starter gear is engaging with the ring gear and the starter is spinning its' gear and the engine is not turning over then the ring gear would be suspect. You may get better responses if you post on the Ford 9N,2N,8N board, try it.

You probably need to replace the starter ring gear. Which requires a tractor split. Which is why nobody did it before.

You may be able to get by in the mean time by turning the engine a few degrees by hand before you try to start it. The engine tends to stop in the same spot each time you stop it, so the ring gear wear will be in only a few spots.

Try this. Put the tractor in high gear and rock it a bit so the engine will turn a little. If the ring gear has a bad place in the teeth then rocking the engine will expose different teeth to the starter drive. All 4 cylinder engines stop turning in one of two places due to coming up on a comprtession stroke.6 cylinders stop in one of three places every time they die.

Sounds like either the ring gear is spinning on the flywheel or you have missing teeth on the ring gear. To find out if its missing teeth the easy way is to grab the fan and turn the engine some then try the starter. If it then spins the engine its missing teeth if not probably a spinning ring gear. You can also pull the starter off and look in at the ring gear and or also use a pry bar on the ring gear to see if it is loose on the flywheel. If it is loose the only way to fix it is to split the tractor and install a new ring gear. BTDT and its not all that hard to do if you have the right tools.

My Case LA did that this summer I found that the shaft on the starter to the Bendix was broken good thing I had a spare starter. I would go with worn teeth on the ring gear though as it sounds like that.

What we are saying ,is even tho the starter drive is going in to the flywheel, there may be teeth missing from the flywheel, and therefore nothing for the drive to engage and turn,so starter just spins without turning motor.Motor can be turned to spot where there are teeth remaining and then try starter. If teeth are missing ,the only answer is to replace flywheel or ring gear.

Ken yep that is what I am saying. Funny how for some reason and engine seems to stop in one place most of the time when its shut off so the teeth wear faster in that one spot. But I have seen engine start fine for years if a person just turns the engine a little bit then try's to start them

Pull the starter and see if the teeth are missing or worn on the ring gear. Could the ring gear has been spinning that's been suggested. Use a pinch bar and see you can move the engine freely.

Your starter may need to be load tested, could the bendix drive is the culprit. Hal

Hello Phil,
The other posts are correct. The engine will stop at the same cranckshaft position for as many cylinders as you have. To find out if the flywheel is damaged, turn the engine by hand a few degrees on the crancksfaft. If the flywheel is worn-out, you will expose good teeth on the flywheel ring and the starter may engage and turn the engine over for you. Give it a try!
