OT Tung Oil vs Tru Oil

I'm monkeying around, redoing the stock on an old single shot .410 shotgun. For the finish, I planned on using Tung Oil, but I've heard Tru-oil is better. Anybody know the difference, or have an opinion? By the way, it's a Revelation 350, which, I believe, is actually a Stevens model 94.

I have used both, but never used Tung oil on a gunstock. Tung oil seems to be thinner than Tru-oil. Tru-oil is more like linseed oil to me.

I think I would go with the Tru oil on a stock. Let a coat dry, then sand with fine steel wool and re coat. The more coats the better as far as I am concerned. I do at least 4-5 coats.

Good luck,Gene

I prefer Danish oil, which is a mixture of tung oil and kettle boiled linseed oil. Watco is the brand that I prefer.

Thanks guys. I'll see what's available at the hardware store, then do the multi-coat thing. Thanks again!

I like tung oil for wood I have 2 grandfather and one grandmother clock that I used the tung oil on when I finished building them. One is over 30 years old and still looks good. Its the grandmother and was the hardest to build. Hal

true oil is boiled linseed oil mixed with japan drier, i use it on guns i refinish, use 220 sandpaper to sand it in then just rub with hands till it thickens and let dry, repeat as many times as you want,...get a scratch, just rub over it with the oil and or sandpaper

Use the Tru Oil. One coat a day for a week.Sand after three coats. One coat a week for a month. One coat a month for a year. Sand with soft rubber squeegee and 220 first 4 coats. 360 next four. 600 next four 1000 last four. And if you really want high gloss polish like hell with toothpaste when you are done.
You will have a high gloss finish superior to the glossiest urethane, and ten times as tough. And just touch up a scratch with more oil.
