Its a series gap. Lets the coil voltage get higher before the plug fires. Used for oil burning engines. At least one line of champion plugs has such air gaps built in. Their book says, "Made for older tractors."

Plugs with a built in gap used to be called "auxiliary gap plugs". Nothing more than a gap in the center electrode where it passes through the porcelain.

Champion markets them as “one tug plug” for small engines, look at the pix on the back of the packaging next you’re at a hardware.

Yes Champion and I believe NGK make an internal gap plug. I dont remember the letter or number that designates the internal gap series, but you can tell it on a Champion by the gas vent hole in the top terminal.
Another company, Aldor ? Claims to make an internal gap plug that opens the gap for more voltage when cold and closes it when warm. Supposed to be a big help for engines that fuel or oil foul the plugs.

Not really. An extra air gap in the plug wire or plug, forces the coil to build more voltage before firing, and will often help fire a fouled plug.
Resistor wires or plugs will dampen RF interference in radios, but will usually make a less intense spark than a non resistor wire or plug.

Tried several varieties of auxiliary gap plugs without any success on JD tractors that don't get worked hard enough to get hot. Nothing seems to work as good as a good really hot mag and changiing plugs periodically.

I used to have a Ford pinto that had baling wire wraped around three plugs and then around the plug wires. The idea was to hold the wire away from the plug to make the spark jump. Plugs lasted quite a while this way. Plug the wire on the plugs it would foul in less than one hundred miles. Bernie Steffen

Had a old BF Avery that fouled plugs. Cut a shirt button inline the plug wires. Worked for me. David.........

recently read on line that making spark jump this way puts stress on electrical ignition systym parts that is not recommended. I have seen engines start with the use of this tenique.
