when i was little dad made some flower planters for mom out of old tires. he turned them inside out, then scallop cut the tops. never thought much about it. after he passed away, some time later i tried to make some. i havent got a clue how he did it, or what he cut them tires with. i tried turning one inside out. ended up trying the backhoe. never got one to work right. couldnt even cut the dang tire with a sawzall. i know he never had a backhoe or sawzall. gotta be some trick to it.

It has to be a non belted bias ply tire and just a sharp knife will cut the tires. Years ago I made several of those tire pots. Find as light weight (Thin) sidewall as you can get. Do not try a truck tire.

There used to be a guy advertise in farm papers that would come to the farm and turn tractor tires for cattle feeders..I have seen the feeders but haven't seen the adv. for a while.

I tried turnng them with a loader too. No luck. Easy as pie with two guys by hand. It needs pressure applyed in variuos directions at the right point in the procedure. This is "the trick".

One of my friends in North Dakota can turn seemingly anything inside out. He cuts out one one of the sidewalls, and uses a big steel ring, chains, and anchors on a old concrete slab and a front end loader (construction kind, not a farm tractor). They make good water tanks also.

A friend of mine and I used to do this years ago. We built a machine and did several from combine tires clear down to small spares for compact cars. Yes, you cut one bead out and then pull the bottom up through the center. Then you have to push the tire out to make it round. Some tires are very easy to flip and others will test you. Some radials will not stay "flipped" but most will. We used to like to see Goodyear tires because they were thinner and were easier to turn. Firestones were much harder as they are thicker for the same size and ply tire. Rice tires can be turned but are difficult. The taller the sidewall on the tire the easier it will turn. It is a job to do this, even with a machine like we had. Mike

The sidewalls actually cut pretty easy with a utility knife with a new blade. They don"t work too bad with just one sidewall cut out and not turned. The guys that come around here just had a rig on a small two wheel trailer. After the sidewall was cut out it was laid on the trailer on top of a narrow piece of a rim of the appropriate size with the cut side up and chains were hooked on the cut side. Then a chain from a hoist arm was hooked to the rim section to pull it up through. The hydraulics for the machine were powered by a five horse Honda engine. Lee

The scallops are made when you first cut the tire before trying to turn it, without those cuts you could not turn the tire

Saw a bit where a vet removed a ball of nylon about the size of a soft ball from a horses stomach.Seems the horse chewed nylon cord from tire feeders.

Do you still have contact information for the guy in ND that turns tires?? We need to get some done and have NO idea who does it anymore.
Thanks!
