OT?...2003 Polaris Sportsman 400 ATV

I Noticed in the archives that there are several Polaris ATV owners on this site. I have a used one that I purchased 3 months ago.

The Universal Owners Manual calls for greasing at several locations on the swing arms. But there are no zerk fittings, just holes. I called a dealer and he said that because the bushings are made from better material, the company no longer recommends that these areas be greased. But he went on to recommend that I could go to an auto parts dealer, buy 'drive-in' zerks and then I could grease these areas myself.

My question is, do you grease your swing arms or do you just ignor what the manual says. This bike is relatively unused, (75 hours) and appears to have never been greased in these areas. Thanks for your help. Ron

I would ask the dealer again if yours is suppose to have sealed bearings there and if so you won't be able to do any good greasing it unless you puncture or knock out the seals. If has those nylon or UMHW bushings you would just be wasting grease they don't need it just replace when worn. Sounds like they left the holes so it can get full of water sooner and have you rebuild it or buy a new one. Too much stuff is made that way today. I'd at least seal the holes off with zerks or silicone.

I would drive zerks in, or tap and thread and grease. That is a good place for water to accumulate. Our newest Sprotsman is an '06 and it has zerks. Doesn't make sense to have a hole in the arm with no zerk.
