Char-lynn Power Steering Hose

Back to working on the JD 70, starting to look like a tractor again. I would like to replace the return hose from orbit motor to the resorvior? and the supply hose to the pump. It is low pressure, has hose clamps to hold it on. Is this a special kind of hose for oil? Can you get this kind of hose at NAPA or does it need to be hydraulic hose? Saw this 70 at the Gathering of the Green, and liked the way the it was set up, want to change mine around to look like this one. Chris

the char-lynn pump puts out around 1000psi pressure on the supply side, so you will need a good hose and fittings for that, the return is low pressure, napa can make up the hoses you need.

I have the CharLynn setup on my 70 to but it is a bit different than the one pictured. They made a bracket years ago just for a 60 and 70 to hold the torque generator, it bolts to the dash using the top bolts by the gauges. My pump is a bit different also, on mine it came with a CharLynn bracket that relocated the generator to the left side under the air cleaner. The the PS pump with the filter on top mounted in place of the genny. It works pretty good, I have a 45 W loader so it is amazing to be able to steer so easy moving round bales.
As far as the hydraulic line on the low pressure side, it does need to be a hydraulic line so that the fitting will work to thread into the block on the bottom of the torque generator. I have replaced both lines on mine in the last year, just went to the Deere dealer next door and had new ones made.
If anyone knows where to find one, I would like to find a new filter to put in mine, I checked all over locally when I first put it on the tractor and no one could match it.
If I get a chance tomorrow, I will take some pics to put on here.

look around and try to find "stratoflex" hose. it was common on older trucks and has a pretty high working pressure, enough for hydraulic applications, but flexible enough to work for low pressure. plus its a plain black so will not stand out too much. at work we get it through our local Mack dealer cause it was used extensively on the trucks in our fleet. everything from coolant hoses, air comp. intake hoses and power steering hoses. also uses field attachable hyd. fittings, not a crimp style

I have a char-lynn on my Cockshutt when the return line went out I went to Napa and they gave a new hose for it. Just be sure to tell them how long and what its for. Make about 6 in. longer and cut to fit on the tractor.

OK, maybe a dumb question. With the tractor running, setting still, can you turn the wheels? I have 2 tractors with Char-lynn units on them, JD 70 and a Farmall 400 with loader. The 400 steers hard with a load in the bucket, but when empty and moving, you can steer easily. The 70, if you aren't moving, you can't turn the wheel. Is this normal or are my units wore out? Chris

I piped mine from the tractor hyd pump to the PS unit, from the PS unit to the 3 point lift. The PS works even with a load in the bucket. The loader works off the 2 remotes in the 3 point hitch.

When I first put my unit on the 70, yes it would sit there not moving and turn the front wheels. Since then I have drained the system several times because the fluid was getting real nasty from moisture. And when I replaced the hydraulic lines, somehow I got oil on the fan belt. With my pump setting where the genny usually sets, I probably got in a hurry and splashed some oil on the belt so now when I try to turn it just sitting, it tries to but the belt start squeeling. So I think if I replaced the belt and degreased the pulleys or something, it should work good again. I don't know the model number of my torque generator but I do know that Eaton lists a regular duty one and a heavy duty one, so maybe that is part of the reason why it would work on one tractor and not another. I am really impressed with how it works, granted it isn't like the 4020 with one finger steering but when I have a 1000 pound round bale on the front, I don't have to wrestle with the steering wheel.
