OK - my generator belt needed to be replaced. I got the fan belt off and I got the new generator belt on (around the fan for now). But I just can't get the fan belt back on the pulley. Is there something that can be loosened in order to get the belt back on?

IH Instructions say:
Loosen the fan spindle bolt (between the gen belt pulley and fan mounting bracket) and slide the spindle down to the bottom of the groove in the fan bracket. The belt can now be worked over the fan and started by hand over the drive pulley. "Then by slowly cranking the engine the belt will find the correct position." Move the spindle upward to tighten belt. Allow 3/4 to 1" slack by depressing the belt with thumb pressure mid-way of the belt. Tighten spindle bolt.

If the generator adjusting strap is loosened and the generator pushed towards the tractor and the belt still won't go on, you might have the wrong belt.

ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THE BELT FROM THE FAN TO THE ENGINE IF SO THERE IS A BOLT ON MINE BEHINE THE FAN THAT YOU LOOSEN ALLOWING THE FAN TO DROP DOWN SOME I AM RESTORING ONE NOW JUST WENT OUT TO THE SHOP AND LOOKED

At the rear end of your fan spindle, there is a nut (may be square, may be hex) that slides up and down in a notch on a piece that comes down from the radiator inlet (the cast piece between the head and the top of the radiator). The notch is such that it binds the high points of the nut to keep it from turning.

To loosen it, look just forward of there on the fan spindle and behind the pulleys, on the front side of the casting. You should see what looks like a hex nut. It's not a nut, it's a machined hex on the fan spindle, and that's what you need to turn to drop the pulleys to get the belts on.

To tighten them back up, use whatever you have in the toolbox that works to pry that big nut on the back up into position, and retighten using the hex on the spindle.
