My first new pickup

With the discounts in place now, I am thinking about a brand-new pickup. I have always bought used--maybe 3 or 4 years old and under 50,000 miles--but the prices I hear that a new one might be bought for is so close to the advertised prices on used, it looks like I may be foolish to buy used.

Anyone have first-hand knowledge of what this should cost? Chevy or GMC 2500HD, 6.0 gas, 4X4, reg cab plain-Jane. I know they LIST right at $30,000. I will buy one if I can get it for $20,000.

Really don't need everyone's speculation--would rather have concrete info from someone who has knowledge of recent transaction. CASH DEAL

I will say this, I know several people with the 6.0, I have a Duramax. I get 7 to 8 more mpgs than they do. Trust me, they want to sell them just as much.

My brother bought an '08 F150, standard trans, regular cab (so they call it, it still has 4 doors but no rear seat), manual windows, a/c, as plain as they come for C$18,000. That was late in the summer when the Canadian dollar was at par with US.

a guy at work his daughter just bought a new car in the fall they had the same idea as you turns out these so called deals are just a marketing gimmic you end up paying the same in the long run they just juggle the numbers around to make it look good

I was at the dealer the other day looking at a '09 Silverado 2500 HD 4x4 6.0 and it had a sticker of over $42,000.

Must be 2-wheelers you're looking at.

My farm needs two pickups. My other one is a 2003 GMC 3500HD 4X4 w 6L gas I bought used with 40,000 miles. I know what the fuel efficiency is. I also know how much more the diesel fuel costs, and how much more the diesel engine costs. In other words, I know what I want. Have those you know that want out from under their gassers to contact me if you would like.
Thanks for the reply.

No. I have the sheet from a dealer. Reg cab 2500HD 6.0 L gas 4x4 "work truck" auto, air, stereo, trailer tow pkg/HD rear suspension and a few small money extras. One was integrated elec trailer brake. White. Not much else. $30,190 list.

It is all the crap you (or at least I)don't really need that makes them expensive(and makes the dealer's profit).

Good Morning,

Local Chevy dealer had a new Chevy and GMC both as you describe (5 spds). Had right around $22,600 on each. I'm sure they would have haggled, especially on a cash deal. I think a local co-op bought both of them.

Good Luck!

Local dealer (Gossett in Memphis) has an ad in today's paper......new '08 Dodge quad-cab........list price $30,815; selling price $13,988. This is not a 'bait and switch'; they've got lots of vehicles at half MSRP. I'm sure other brands are similarly priced.

I'd tend to agree, seems like everyone is getting 20MPG out of their diesels, until they aren't. The latest Dodge and Ford diesels are getting at BEST 16-17 mpg, and usually closer to 13-14 MPG. Even if a gas engine is getting 13-14 MPG, it comes back pretty fast with the 40%-50% greater cost of diesel fuel.

The block, crank and pistons on a dieselshould last longer than that of a gas engine, but the cost of replacing fuel pumps, injectors and other EXPENSIVE items suddenly makes the diesel less efficient to operate. Especially now that gas engines last so much longer than previous gas engines if properly maintained.

One of my brothers has a 2000 Ford F350 with the V10, he averages 15 empty and 9-11 loaded (as in 12-14 big round bales on a goose neck) and he's got over 200K on it. So far he's WAY AHEAD of his twin brother's same truck with a 7.3. Another brother with a 6.4 Ford is WISHING he could get the same mileage as the old V10 gas and is dreading the day his goes out of warranty as he's already seen how common and expensive some of the failures can be under warranty.

As far as haggling goes, you may not want to tell the dealer you are going to pay in cash. They will try to sweeten their end of the deal through the financing.

Tell them you are going to pay in cash only AFTER you have settled on a price.

I was buying the truck you"re asking about for around $22,300 this summer. Found a new leftover "07 for $20,900 also (Ebay of all places). These were work trucks like you wanted, but with the snow plow package also. Don"t know what the deals are now. Ever seen Pontiac"s hot car the G8 GT? I thought the local dealer was screwed when he had 9 of them earlier. He now has 23, counted them the other day. Drove one this summer, I hit 105 mph as I came onto the interstate from off the ramp. Felt like I was going 60, WOW.

This is a little bit of speculation on my part, since I haven't been talking to a dealer, but I have been paying lots of attention to the half ton truck ads for quite some time now. The ones that have the heavy discounts are the ones that have optional equipment, the base "work trucks" have only been increasing in sticker price with each passing year, and it looks like those they can't discount very much beyond three or four thousand if your talking about a truck with no options.

Right now Berlin City in Gorham New Hampshire is advertising a leftover 2008 Chevy Silverado 2500 4x4, Duramax Diesel, crew cab, power windows/locks, cruise, etc. . . MSRP is $42,797, but there is a $10,000 factory rebate, a $500 commercial rebate, and a Berlin City discount of $4,298, for a grand total of $14,798 off from MSRP. That truck can be yours for an advertised $27,999

$20,000 won't do it. 2 problems. First, to get a "deal", you would have to find an '08, and probably none around like you want. Second, without high margin options, not much room for a dealer to negotiate. That leaves you with ordering an '09. Dealer invoice will be around 27,500. That leaves him, at most, around $750 profit figuring he gets about a 3% holdback. Knock off $1500 rebate, that leaves you at around $25,500 and nets him $250. You still have to add tax and title, in Illinois that would add about $1800 dollars, so $27,300 out the door for a cash deal. If you finance, he will get a kickback, so price can be lower. If no prepayment penalty, you might come out ahead to finance and pay truck off 1st payment. Let us know how it works out!!!

It seems to me that many people are comparing half ton trucks to the 3/4 ton truck that you want. There are only two engine options in new Chevy GMC 2500HD trucks (08 or 09), the 6.0 gas and the Duramax Diesel. Manual transmissions are not avaiable for either of them, they have to be automatics. We recently purchased a '08 2500HD 4x4 4 door cab 6.0 gas, 6 speed automatic, 8 foot bed (almost impossible to find) with 200 miles on it for $26K no trade before taxes that had a sticker price around $36K. It was the best deal we could find.
As much as we would like to have another diesel, with the price of gas vs. diesel and the added cost of a diesel truck, it does not make economics for the normal user. The fuel mileage of the 6.0 is about 13 MPG empty and about 10 loaded, just to break even on the difference in fuel prices the diesel would have to 20 empty and 15 loaded, which is unlikely. After you factor in the $6K adder for the diesel the economics go to pot.

6.0 litres are hard on gas. I know because I have one. Probably good if you pull a trailer a lot. A dealer up here is advertising that if you buy an F150, Super Duty or Expedition, you can get a Ranger or other car(can't remember which) for only $1 extra. This week only. I still think there's a gimmick involved. If not, I think car makers/dealers have been ripping us off for years. Dave

Just about 2 years ago I ordered a Dodge 2500 with the 5.7 engine, 6 sp manual, delete box, crusie control, limited slip rear end, and sliding rear window. With rebates, $500 farm burear discount, the price I was able to get it down to was 20,100. Has been good so far. Only about 14000 mi though. I can get 17 mpg if I take it easy on it going back and forth to work, 45 to 50 mph, some stops, 18 mi each way.

I priced a 2008 F250 5.4 liter 6 speed manuel plain Jane for $19650. I would have traded but they wouldn't give me anything for my 05 Dodge. If I could afford it I would buy it out right. This was at a dealer in southern MO.

I just drove one for the last week.

09, 6.0L, auto, 4x4, 8 ft box, a/c, manual windows.
To me it was the definition of a work truck.
Manual windows, manual t/case, rubber floor mats... no frills. Exactly what I would buy.

$24,000 MSRP. You will get it cheaper than that, depending on the individual dealer.
