I always did wander as a kid when they would incorporate a baler with a combine to bale the straw.

Some of the European combines German IH D8-61, D8-62, French IH F8-63 etc. had the option attachment of a small baler unit built on the the rear instead of, say, a straw spreader.

My college roomate worked on stuff like that for Iowa State Univ. Proffessor said the best option was large square balers as there was no stopping to unload and amount of material handled was okay. Also saw some john deere cotton baler prototypes a couple years ago out of their production plant in Ankeny IA. efficiency, efficiency...
