looking to purchase some tire chains for my 165, I am looking for opinions on which is better and why I can get the double ring for a 18.4 - 30 for 348.00 and the duo-grip for 372.00 for a pair. I like them both but just looking for the best bang for the buck. I will be useing these in muddy conditions and gravel plowing with ice and mild temp snow conditions. thank you

We run the Duo-grip on our MF 165 and they work pretty good in the ice. Never ran anything else except the old ladder style, so I can't commnet on the double ring style.

I've been to their site before to price out what they would cost for some of our tractors. The Duo grip is cheaper than the double ring for the 18.4x30 by almost $70 in the link you posted, and the prices don't match up with what you said before.

If you poke around some more, they have a link that shows how the different styles compare in ice, snow, pavement, etc...

thanks for the link, I have priced them locally and on the net. I would rather purchase them local then online. If i do get the duo grip they will be ordered and that will take longer.

All we have ever used around here are ladder bars. The upgrade to a cross link every other side link instead of every fourth side link does help.

I use duo-grip on my tractors, but grandpa used double ring for many years. They really get good traction, but are rough riding if you do any road travel or have a long driveway to blade off. If it is strictly for field use, I'd go with what ever is cheaper and easier to get.

I can tell you exactly what you want to know. I've had double ring chains for years. They ride better, go on way easyer, grip very good on ice/mudd, and clean themselves good. They were getting wore down. My brother bought a brand new set of duo-grip chains for his tractor. Shortly afterwards, he sold the tractor. I bought the like new duo-grip chains from him(cheep). I would say they perform about the same as double ring chains. They take WAY longer to put on the tire. And ride way rougher. BUY THE DOUBLE RINGERS.

We got ours locally too, and atleast 15 years ago. Probably closer to 17 years ago, or whenever we got our 165.

The nice thing about tirechain.com is their price match. Don't know all the details on it, but next time we need chains I'll probably look into it a bit further.

Next year I might be looking to put some chains on our 1855 that's got 18.4x38" tires on it. Not sure how they would work with the fuel tank fenders though, because there isn't much clearance between the tires and the fenders. Espescially since we just put new tires on it this summer.

I looked at tirechains.com on 12-22-08 and the double rings were listed at $310.36, now they are listed at well over $400.00. Seems like a steep rise in price for such a simple design.
