Converting 1000 rpm to 540

My problem is just the opposite of the post below. My only cab tractor is 1000 rpm and I would like to use it on my New Holland 850 baler. Is there any convertor for the tractor or gear changes in the baler available? Merry Christmas everyone!

They sell aftermarket gear reduction kits, but they are expensive. Many tractors are also easy to change by just inserting the opposite side of the PTO output shaft into the tractor. But I assume you have read the operators manual and it isn't this easy. A lot of larger tractors didn't offer 540 but you could install one from a smaller tractor which I seen done on several IH's. I would anticipate that you could also change the gears or pulleys/belts on the baler. I've got an M&W mower and you just switch positions of the driven and driver gears in the gear boxes. Personally if you can't easily change the baler I would spend the money and get the expensive aftermarket gear reduction.

Tom I don`t have a clue what to tell you but, since you wished everyone a Merry Christmas-I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas !!!!!!!!!!

If the tractor has adequate horsepower and good power steering at lower RPM's, you can run it at just over 1/2 of the 1000 RPM speed and idle along while baling, just DO NOT forget and rev it up.

You certainly wouldn't be the first to use this "work around".

Check with the NH dealer. There MAY be a kit available to make the BALER compatible with a 1000 RPM PTO.

As shown in the other post, Hub City Gear makes speed reducers/increasers to mount on the tractor PTO to go either way, but the cost is nearly $2000.00

Tom there is at least one way to do this economically but it all depends on the person on the seat otherwise it can cause major damage to pto machines. First of all what size 1000 pto shaft do you have? Tractors such as the MF2805, AC7080 and the 4840Deere any tractor above 160hp pto hp have larger splines once that is found you can get a 1000 to 540 adapter now you can use a hand tach and adjust your throttle to achieve something a little above 540rpm I'm thinking 575rpm I don't have the Dyno chart anymore that set the rated rpm before test. You can even do that with the neighbors tractor at their tach rated rpm adjust your throttle to achieve the output speed then mark your tach at that not to exceed position now the operator comes into play because you will have to have the disipline to not throw the throttle full forward while starting up the baler. If you have someone else running the baler you may have to use some ingenuity to put a mechanical stop on the throttle. It all works I've done it with things like haybines, manure spreaders and square balers, I have not tried it with forage harvesters because of the tractors rpm torque rise range due to varying loads. If I remember right IH wouldn't guarantee their double pto option above 100hp anyway but there were many 10's and 14's with them anyway. Good Luck CT

If you will read the post below by BOB, it shows exactly what you are asking about; even has the website reference to the manufacturer - - problem solved. Tom

I have a 660 that the previous owner put a sprocket on the pto and a chain to a jack shaft . The pto speed on the jack shaft was increased by about one half with a bigger sprocket on the pto and a smaller one on the jack shaft. It will move the pto off center but it is mounted securely and allows the engine to run slower and maintain the pto speed on the other shaft. Its a bit jury rigged but it must have worked for him. Go F12's

I'm not familiar with that NH bailer but.......Some equipment is built for 540/1000 conversion by unbolting and turning over a gearbox.

I would try to change the baler, either gearbox or beltpulley&chain sprockets. I think you can spend a lot of money on a $1000 or less if you're not careful. JMO

What tractor?
Most tractors between 80 and 160 hp can be changed simply by changing the stub.

Otherwise I'd adapt the baler, but I don't ebleive the 850 will have any built in features that allow changing it. You'd have to source a gearbox and probably change some sprockets and pulleys...

In this case, the the HP of the tractor is IMMATERIAL, beyond what is needed to operate the BALER.

The gearbox only needs to be strong enough to run the baler, as the baler driveline is protected by a slipclutch.

DON'T KNOW ABOUT A BAILER AS WE ROUND BAIL AND NEED THE HP, BUT HAVE USED AND HIGHLY RECOMEND THIS SET UP FOR SPRAYING HAYBINE AND SICKLE BAR
WE USE A OLIVER 1855 WITH THE 1000 SHAFT AND CHANGED THE PTO ENDS ON THE SPRAYER;HAYBINE USE ADAPTER ON THE SICKLE; RUN AT 1200 RPM; DAD NEVER SAW THE SENCE OF WINDING OUT TO 2500 FOR A SPRAYER PUMP, THEN WE TRIED IT ON THE HAYBINE, WORKS AS GOOD; MAY HAVE TO GEAR DOWN IF HILLY
PS,,, WE NEVER RUN AT MUCH MORE THAN 1800RPM ONLY ON THE SILAGE BLOWER THEN AT 2500{PTO}
