My grandfather had an old lawn mower that looked sort of like a beetle. It had a mowing deck that hung up front or just back of the front. Had four tires, the two rear steered the mower and where very close together. The seat flipped up to access the engine (gas). Does anyone have a clue as to what the brand was?

Sounds like the old thing that the school district had here back in the late 50s and early 60s. Couldn't tell you what make it was though, been WAY to many years ago.

I have been assured by a very knowledgeable friend
of mine that owned one that you are describing
a "Gravely Promaster 60" mower.

I hope this helps.

That is odd you would say that. I am told my Grandfather got this mower off the local school district for $19.00 back in the 70"s.

My Grandfather said it was a Gravely. The mower had two wings that would fold down to add cutting width. The motor was behind the seat with a cast iron gas tank, a number of belts, and steering operated with a chain.
