PTO universal

I was attempting to disassemble the U joint on my woods mower. By pressing the cups in one direction one cleared the universal hole while the other just pushed out by 1/2 of the cup height. Is there a trick to this? The other option is cutting the center of the universal out then the cups will push out. This is a good universal, and I don't want to destroy it, since I don't have a new one. Stan

i usually disassemble mine in a vice, but 2 steel or hardwood blocks will work. first make sure all the circlips/retainer clips are removed. lay the assembly in the vice or in the blocks so that one yoke rests with an ear on each block and the other is vertical between them now with a small sledge hammer or large ball peen hammer down on the vertical yoke, this should cause the cap to pop up out of the yoke. now carefully turn the assembly over and re-insert the cross into the open cap, and do the same. you should now be able to seperate one yoke from the u-joint. to remove the second pair of caps lay the trunions of the cross on the blocks an repeat procedure. (if using steel or vice protect trunions with a rag or other softer material) ive done this many times with all sizes of u joints with luck. just be careful to keep all bearing cap needles in place, an extra dab of grease helps

Press it one way to remove one cup, then press it back the other way, using a slightly smaller socket in place of the cup you just removed..the 2nd cup will be out..
Sounds too simple...did I miss something..?? Is there any obstruction..?

Ron.

The bearing caps have to be pushed out not pushed in for dissassembly.

Remove all retaining clips holding the caps in. You can hammer on the cross to push the first cap out then hammer the cross in the other direction to remove the cap directly across from the first one remove.

I only hammer on them when a press is not available.

Pushing it one way only pushes the opposite cap 1/2 way out, then the cross bottoms. I have done a few car u joints and they do what you are saying. Stan

the others advise is right, i would only add that if you do mess it up, dont panic its a common u-joint, and most good parts stores like carquest or napa has them in stock, just take all the parts with you and show it to the oldest guy in there
