Hey folks, I recently went to pick up one of many old trucks that I have been parting out. Well I went there and god bless the little old lady(74 yrs old) I got it from, she brought me a jack from the old shed that the truck had sittin by for years. After I loaded the truck I put the jack back for her and noticed that there was a narrow front gasser 3010 sitting in the back of the shed with a old brush cutter to it and in back of that was an 71 or 72 4020 diesel with a narrow front, lookin like they hadnt been used for a few years but in excellent condition.....To make a long story short I asked her if they were for sale and she said yes! she told me that if I would bring her 4500 and some of my deer meat I could have them. Should I try to offer her more? or feel like an A$$ and realize that I got a good deal? She told me that her husband had passed away from a sudden heart attack in 1984 and since then she was the only one to drive them. The 3010 hasnt ran in 8 years and the 4020 was started(but not moved)just two years ago with the help of some neighbors. Help me folks! I am about to bang my head off the walls thinking about this. In this pridiciment what would you do?

you asked her if they were for sale and she said yes. she then quoted you a price. if this price was her price and you did not try to get it lowered then i would just pay what she asked for. guilt? no, don"t think so. good deal, yes.

Buying non-runners can be tricky. You might just find out that the 4020 needs a full engine rebuild, fuel injection system, and transmission work. It's starting to sound like YOU got ripped off now :)

I guess I would let her know that they could be worth a lot more than that if they were in running condition, but if she wants to be rid of them, so be it.

She wants you to have them, and told you what she wanted. I'd close the deal ASAP, and bring her venison from now on.

Maybe she meant each ? I"ve got confused by this before !

Don"t get them ! Just send me her number and I"ll handle it.

Thanks for some of the opinions so far. I just went to look at the 4020 to see how much it was going to take to get it running. Well lets just say it pretty well popped right off with the help of two new batteries. I didnt move it as she wasnt home and there was a padlock on the door behind it. The 3010 dosent seem like its getting gas. I cant seen to get it to fire off and stay running. Im trying to do as much as I can but this weather is starting to get to me. I also found a brand new seat that I am guessing was bought for the 3010. I looked at the hour meters on both and if they work the 3010 has 3855 hours and the 4020 has 1769. I can believe the 4020 is that low houred but not sure on the 3010. I also found while snooping:) a weight homeade bracket for the front of the 4020 and 8 jd suitcase weights.

Let her keep them. Introduce her to Yesterdays Tractors and get her hooked into the hobby. She"s not too old to play around with those tractors herself. It will keep her young!

Does she have any relatives that might want them? If you buy them too cheap and a son or grandson, son in law..(you get the drift) wanted them, you're gonna make an enemy and a bad reputation for the rest of your life. If she hasn't,consider it her Christmas gift to you.

Lagally right, but you might want to search your conscience. If you have no religious commitment then go for it. I hope that my widow will sometime find someone who has searched his conscience.

If she is happy and you are happy, It's a good deal, make sure that you understood her correctly and if your conscience bothers you make sure you do a lot more for the old gal than bring her venison. Many of these old widows have no one to care for their problems around the house. This one just may become your resposibility to help out in her coming years. Just the fact that you are concerned shows character and maybe she sees that also, just my 2 cents.

Well the question I would ask myself I am keeping them for my collection or am I going to make a hefty profit. If you sell them and it still bothers you give her some of the proceeds money or do her handyman stuff around the house.

Ask her where she goes to church and give the church the same amount as your giving for the tractors. You will all be blessed with that transaction. And she might be so impressed that you might even get the farm some day. Don't laugh ---this very situation happened to a neighbor of mine.

If that 4020 is a side console you know that it is worth a lot more than what she wants. If you are not a collector and don't need the tractors for your operation, why don't you offer to sell them for her and split everything 50/50 that you get over $4500? She probbly could use a little extra money and you would have a clearer conscience down the road (at least I would if I was in your shoes.)

I would make the deal, maybe take her some deer meat every year, or ask if there's anything you could help her with.
Conscience works more ways than one, some people aren't looking to get rich by selling things they no longer need.

Depending on the person, 74 isn't that old. Are you going to use the tractors? If you just wanted to resell them, I'd tell her that you'd try to get them running, clean them up and sell them on a commission for her. Maybe $1000 or $1500 depending how much work they need. Then you wouldn't have to worry about your conscience and she'd be really grateful. The fact that you're ready to bang your head off the wall, answers your questions. If you take advantage of her, it will come back to bite you. Dave

C'mon, guys, there's no real question here...
46Dodge, you're troubled, or you wouldn't've posted; if you want "grab 'em" answers, maybe you should post on a Wall Street forum?
Moonlight: OK if you have no religious commitment??? I thought religious people strove to live their religion all the time; and I'm not sure, as an atheistic, abundant, tree hugging enviro wacko that my feelings aren't hurt by your implying that non-religious people have no consciences...
Larry: Geez, c'mon, it's Christmas; how about something, what was it: "that which you do to the least of my flock you do to me"??
Remember, you're supposed to be the backbone of the nation people, who don't want to be taken advantage of and don't take advantage of anyone...
Who are the rest of us utterly and permanently da--ed going to use as good examples if you let your standards erode??
Seriously, it's "do unto others etc" season.
Best wishes to all.

Why not turn the situation around. This 74 year old woman was your mother. Is that the way you would want her to be treated? Listen to your conscience, you will have to live with it.

Congrats on a good find, but more important congrats for wanting to treat the lady like you would like your mother treated. If you want to sell the 4020, let me know.

I was recently in a similar situation. I fellow who is good friends with my Wife's family and knows I like old tractors gave me a Farmall Super M.

Now I didn't feel right just taking it but on the other hand I really couldn't justify spending what it was worth on a tractor at the time. That is if he wasn't giving it to me I really wouldn't have been interested/looking for a SM at that time.

He told me that he would just take some honey in return (I'm a bee keeper), so I countered by saying that as long as I had honey I would keep him stocked.

Now is it a fair deal, I don't know but he seems happy and is getting more then nothing, and I'm happy as I have a rather nice machine that I am at least paying for one way or another.

It is amazing how nice some folks are, I hope I can be in the position to do something similar at some point as well.

In your situation, well I might round that figure off and make sure she's set with venison as long as she wants it. You could always talk to her about the price as well, say you think they very well might be worth more. You might be surprised, she may not want any more, that $4,500 figure came from somewhere...

Standard non-running tractor rules apply as well. I've had a couple of good deals turn into bad ones when I got home as I'm sure as most here have as well.

A lot of good thoughts in here...

It's possible she has reached a point she wants them gone because of the memories.

It's also possible that the price she's quoted you is based on something totally unrelated... she's 74...she is probably on social security.. there are limits to what she can make/earn/report and not affect her social security income. Everyone seems to be in agreement the tractors are worth way more than what she's asking (I'm new enough to this and favor red over green so I don't know)... but if you want to get into more money then you may want to buy one this year and one in January to minimize her risk with uncle sam. (Sorry, I don't know all the IRS/SS rules in detail).

I think it's commendable of you to think of being fair in the situation. Class act!

Merry Christmas!

This kinda reminded me of a story from here years back.

Fellow bought a tractor from an old lady. He put some money into it. Then next thing he knows lady claims he took the tractor and wants it back. She had the original reciept from when the tractor was new. This guy had no reciept and I think had to give it back as he couldn't prove ownership.

Get it in writing ! and like someone else mentioned the $4,500 figure came from somewhere ?

A few years back I saw a very nice 4020 side console model with maybe 5,000 hours sell at auction held by original owners and it brought $15,500 with the duals added in. Have heard of several selling for more than this afterward.

Well I go them home, drove the 4020 around today after changing fluids, it runs great no blowby. The 3010 fired up but I think it needs the carb cleaned. She sold the weights to me for 60 a peice which is what I told her what i thought they were worth. Islipped her an extra 100 with out her noticing. She said the 4500 came from what she remembers them being bought for(not sure on that). She said that she wants to see them painted up, and if i do call her because she wants to drive them. I had a nice 4 hour long conversation with her in which she told me she wants me to never get rid of them.(I wont now!) Im feeling really good on it now, you can tell she wants me to have them. Im trying to get pictures of em to post but the camera is not cooperating at all. She also stated that she has no children interested in them, she said she talked to them about it. Im now making these my winter project so that I make sure she drives them next spring!!!! To give the 4020 a work out tonight me and my son put it on the feed mill, much to my surprise the 1000 rpm shaft has never been used. I also looked up the serial #s and the 3010 is a 61 and the 4020 is an early 72 with sr tranny. Im really proud of em now and hope to get the 3010 painted up and leave the 4020 original as it is so very nice. pictures soon
