Heater Core MESS !

Got antifreeze fumes in the car now ,,,How do I get that scummy smelly stuff off the windshield and Windows??? .. Heater core is OK for now,Antifreeze was not strong enuf for the sudden dip in temps , But the core was the only victim , NAPA had some miracle sealant , This is a 86 Celegrity ,Does anyone know what you have to go thru to change the Core ?,,It Is a good dependable family loaner car .. Thanx , Jim

The hardest part of that job is getting the hoses off and back on, since they are located so low behind the engine on the passenger's side. The inside part of the job is not too bad. When you remove the glove box, you can find the screws that hold the cover on the case. Instead of draining the cooling system completely, I usually use long nose locking pliers and clamp off the hoses to minimize loss of coolant. Once you get the heater core replaced and wash out the cover, it will dry up pretty good. The film will dry out and the smell will dissipate over a few hours' time. Then just clean the windshield with some good glass cleaner, and you're set. I wish I had my old '85 Eurosport back. HTH
Good Luck and God Bless.

You are wasting your time with NAPA miracle sealant. It will just fail when you need it most . Do the job right the first time and replace the core.

2.8 hrs by the book.More like an hour and a half.

Disconnect lines under hood, the rest is under the dash.Pretty easy job.Might as well bite the bullet & get it over with.

Thanx Guys , I can probably handle the core change , Of all the motors I watch over,, This one got past Me , when I checked antifreeze, on all the motors , Nephew had celebrity for a parts runner for 4 wheel drive unit , and never got around to checking it when the celebrity came home .. Merry Christmas , Jim

I used sealer on one also, even nastier when it leaked again (3 days later BTW).

Good Luck, and Merry Christmas to you too.

Dave

I have a 1981 Mercury Cougar and to change the heater core you need to pull the dash. It sits inside a plastic or fiberglass container so antifreeze doesn't run out. Hal

Sorry to hear about your heater core, i think Ethylene Glychol is very posionous, so you may want to get the core changed out. These posts make me cringe as i am always reminded of the autos that i used to work on. Bought imports since the early 90"s, and havent been under the hood for anything other than to check the oil (never low, but do it out of habit), and oil changes.

Cant even look at anything other than a Toyota or Honda now. Have a Nissan, and think i will go with a Toyota in a decade or so when this one gets 250000+ miles. Plenty of time to save enough money to pay cash.

Good luck

Some cars have O ring seals where the heater core attaches to lines. Have had problems with them leaking when car first starts, and warms up.
