david brown 1210 4wd transmission

On my last bit of snow plowing while in 4wd, I heard a snap when put into reverse ( a couple of times) then when put into first a heavy bearing grumble/grind, with no movement.
Seems to run fine in 2wd, so while I wait for the weather to break and get some time to investigate I"m trying to guess where to look.
As it was only in 4wd, naturally I would think it is in the front transfer case, or maybe the CV joints in the front wheels.
Looking for any tips guesses, or methods of diagnostics that anyone has.
It was a real heavy grumble, almost a non meshing of gears type sound.

I don't know anything about that tractor, but I just bought some tires off one of those (I believe it was that model) at Eagle Tractor in Eagle Lake, Texas. The tractor is to be parted out, number is 800 833 5867. I have no ties to them, just thought this might be helpful.
