Has anyone bought some 1/4" plate steel latley??? Building a trailer for my welder generator, and need a 4'X8' sheet of 1/4" steel. Diamond plate would be nice....but not neccesary. Aluminum would be nice to....but probobaly pretty expensive.....Ideas of costs???

Just before the price of junk went down, I priced some 1/2 x 2 bar for around 3.85 a foot. 4 X 10 1/8 sheets were $300 plus. I quit listening then and said thank you and hung up. Maybe by spring I can get some cheaper.

I bought 3 4' X 12' sheets of 3/16' hot rolled 2 months ago $285.00 a sheet. Nivert cut these to 4' X 6' for me for $10.00 extra. Another operation I deal with (seldom) wanted $425.00 a sheet and $300 to cut them.

Seems to me it was still in the 90 cent to 1 dollar per pound range through the fall. I don't know what it is right now.
I forget the weight per sheet but it would be a few hundred anyway.
Wouldn't 3/16 do for a trailer or do you have a special purpose?

I need a few rolls of 42" woven wire for my fence, and when the local junk haulers said the bottom had dropped out of their market, I decided it was a good time to buy. WRONG! The three places that handel it here, want 180.00 for a 330 ft roll. they bought it back when prices were high, I guess, and don't want to take a loss. Guess I'll wait 6 mo. and see if they go out of business, and can buy at their sale!

Steel plate at the yard store in Wichita KS is 50 cents perpound - but I didn't see anything quite that large. It is salvage - don't know what new would cost.

Have you got the option to buy from a scrap yard? I was needing some steel tubing to replace a couple of 4x4 posts and the local steel handler scared me off. They are located around the corner from a big scrap yard. As I was driving by, a truck was going in with a piece of pipe like I wanted sticking out the back. I discovered a whole new world....... regardless of what you get, you weigh empty, load up, and pay 20 cents a kg on the way out. I'm across the pond, but the same principal.

Just got off the phone with the 2nd steel supplier. 6" sch 40 steel pipe is $21.50 per foot per 24' section. Cut to 4 5' and 1 4' sections is $23.10 per foot.
No doubt some suppliers are still trying to break even at best on some materials they bought while prices were real high. Look for the high volume sellers and call around. Be ready with CASH. Some will sell at cost for cash to move inventory.
