True story, tonight I was a good samaritan FUNNY

So tonight, my wife, another bridesmaid and I were leaving the rehearsal dinner of a friend of ours. As we were leaving the parking lot, I noticed a Toyota 4 runner in the bottom of a ditch, stuck. 6 girls were all standing on the other side of the ditch, with one in the driver’s seat. They were just in some slick mud, but stuck because they couldn't get up a 5' incline at about a 35-40 degree angle.
Another guy pulled up in a Jeep wrangler and told the girl, "If you have a rope, I'll pull you out."
She said, "My friend has one in her car."
I asked the driver if she minded if I gave it a shot to get it out. She said, sure.
The Jeep guy chuckled, and said do you want me to move my jeep.
I said sure, I am gonna rock it back and see if I can get it up the incline.
I am from the country and have gotten a couple trucks stuck way worse than they ever should have been and thought it might work.
Well, I put the 4Runner in reverse and backed up a little bit. Put it in drive and looked at the dash. That was when I noticed it.

IT WAS 4 wheel drive.
I just turned the switch on the dash. Rolled the window down to look cool and easily drove the 4 Runner onto the concrete driveway.
Girls on the other side of the ditch were cheering.
I was just glad to help. The driver then came up and said thank you. I can't believe you were able to get it out.
I politely showed her the switch on her dash. I asked her if she knew what that switch was. She said, "No. What does it do?"
"That is 4 wheel drive. 2 wheel high, 4 wheel high and 4 wheel low. Have a good night."

Tonight I was a hero. I impressed 6 distressed ladies, my wife and her friend with the turn of a switch.

Great save... You are "de man" to those ladies.. I estimate that less than 50 percent of 4X4 SUV's ever get locked in 4 wheel drive.. The drivers do not even know how..

i always get a "high" when i can help someone in distress. maybe someday someone will be able to help me. i never take money for helping. it's just the great feeling i get from doing a good deed. i wish more people were like you for lending a hand.

I have helped a few people out over the last several years. I try not to make a habit of it the way the world is now, but every once in a while God tells me to stop and help out. If they try to pay me, I tell them that to pay me they have to help someone else someday. Chris

Congrts!
Now, did you show her how to take it OUT of 4WD? She'll probably be driving around for 6 months with that switched turned......

Way to go!
Reminds me of some time back that; while doin' my rounds with a route truck; came upon one of my old schoolteachers walking, a short distance from a Jeep parked smack in the middle of the road way out in the boonies. Couple of ladies were sitting in the Jeep. They were visiting his son, had borrowed son's Jeep and were out taking picts of fall leaves.
Seems he had stopped, took picts and when got ready to go again, the shifter was locked in park.
We were all on a learning curve then and even I had just learned the new safety feature of putting your foot on the brake to shift out of park.
Sure saved their day.

How bout the ones with 4 WD suv's that slide off in the shallow ditches of the Intersate highways in 2 inches of snow and leave it there instead of driving it out. Only to pay a wrecker bill.

Saw one yesterday that slide down a steep bank off the interstate ended up next to a gravel road with no ditches below, and just left it rather than driving onto the gravel thru 4 inches of snow.

Sounds like My wonderful Italian wife of 3 yrs ,LOL,, Has no idea of the feature of the vehicle and is literally amazed when I show her .. You should a seen her when I floored the Northstar caddy to turn around and catch My brother one day .. She had been driving the Caddy for some 6 monthes and had no idea that thing would RUN LIKE A VETTE !..or .where the washer fluid goes?, or oil?, and Rear engine cars ? Why did they put the Motor There ??...No idea?... Wonderful simple Logic.. LOL!

There are a bunch of campsites along the river here. Of course the guys who own them buy SUVs to make the trip out to the country. They can come in along the river, which includes about a mile of gravel road, or drive three miles out of their way to come in from the other direction and stay on pavement. Which route to you suppose most of those rugged outdoorsmen take in their 4wd vehicles?

I heard a couple related jokes about that sort of thing a few years back. You might be a South Dakota farm wife if you know what 4-L, 4-H, and 2-H mean on your SUV and have actually used them!! Another was "You might be a South Dakota farm wife if you drive a SUV out of necessity, not a status symbal!!"

I was at a gas station when a young lady was trying to get the foil off a bottle of Heet. She asked me if I could do it for her. I said yes but if I tell you how and you do it yourself you'll never forget how. I told her to use her car key. She thanked me and the key worked just fine.

A friend of mine walked out of a convenience store and saw a lady pouring washer fluid into her power steering reservoir. When he tried to help her and she got defensive, so he left. Just out of curiosity, I wonder how long a power steering system will run on a mixture of washer fluid and oil. Jim

A friend of my, at work, got a phone call and afterwards was fureous.
He had a Ford 4x4 truck and had used the truck in 4x4 LOW RANGE, parked it, and came to work.
His 18 year old daughter and a friend drove the truck about 20 miles and called to tell him it was making a "loud moaning noise", and wouldn't run but about 45mph. She also said the temperature gauge was on HOT, and the motor was making a racket.
He was not happy but admitted it was his fault.

Was out 4 wheeling in the mud one night in a freinds monster truck :) Got stuck reletively easy. We were trying to figure out how in the heck we were going to get out and found out one of th girls bumped the gear shift out of 4wd.

A few years ago, some one got a 2wd wagon stuck in a snow drift in front of my house. Rather than push and work hard, I asked if I could drive it and I just rocked it a little and backed it out. The key was not spinning the tires and polishing the ice. The driver was amazed and very careful to drive away from the snow drift.

It reminds me of something that happened to my wife years ago. We had just purchased our first our first Chrysler mini van after driving a Chevy Beauville van. My wife was trying to get up the slopes of Mt Hood to our house in a snow storm. She couldn't get up the road, so she stopped and put on the chains. The only problem was that she put them on the back wheels. She told me the story that night when I got home. It was really a mistake on my part to laugh.

Reminds me of my wife when we were first married. We lived in town and had to park on the street. I told her that in the winter time, always park the car with the windshield wipers UP, so they don't freeze down if it ices or snows. The next winter, we had moved to a farm house. I went out to go to work on day after a 2" snow and found that she had, indeed, left the wipers in the up position - and the car parked in the garage.....

calfornia judge just ruled a girl can sue the guy that puller her out of a burning car because shes paralized . about 2 years i did the same thing but i dont know hoe she made out.. the dash was up on her and i saw flames under the hood, so i pulled her out, took alot of force to do so. about 2 minutes later a cop showed up and put the fire out. i left unnoticed. gee wizz.

On the flipside, we had a little incident just the other night out at the corner. Nasty hill comin' down to it, about 15% with a right hand curve before you get to the corner at the bottom.

So it was snowin' out and I see the red lights over at the corner and go to investigate and provide adult supervision.

There was a brand new (paperplates even) 4wd Durango up on its side and right athwart of the road. Most folks that lose it on that curve go straight and shoot off the outside of the curve and wind up in my neighbor's back field, sometimes rubber side down, sometimes not. I guess this gal got spinnin' before she ever got into the curve, as she went off the right, over the ditch and took out a light pole before finding her way back to the road where she flipped.

Luckily, nobody got hurt, but the driver was quite outraged that her 4WD was defective, because she knew she had it on, something that the trooper verified. (I can alnmost read the lawsuit!) Havin' it and not usin' it to get squared away is one thing. These drones that have it and think they can drive like they're on a dry road run me nuts. I think there is often a sticker on the sun-visor that explains that your 4WD vehicle has the same brakes as a 2WD, and one should not get carried away, and should exercise caution in conditions that require its use. I suppose as long as no one gets hurt I can laugh. Otherwise, I think it's pretty sad.

Scotty,
Used to work winters for a friend in the tow business, had a lady?? in a 4wd chew me out because I took so long to get to her. She KNEW it shouldn't take 20 minutes to get to her because I was only 10 miles away and she was going 60 before she went in the ditch, trooper told me if she didn't shut up I could drive away.

Walt, although most on this forum won't believe me, they were all brunettes.
But, this was in DFW, and I am pretty sure that was the first time that vehicle has ever been off asphalt/concrete and has probably never been down a gravel road.

Maybe. HAHA! It was actually at the urging of my wife to stop.

This might be a good idea for YTMAG though. If we had some www.ytmag.com window stickers, I would know if it was a guy on the forum.

Maybe they could make some mylar ytmag decals we could buy.

Back when I had a 1990 Dodge Dakota 4x4 I found out when in four wheel drive the braking is more critical and can put you in the ditch quicker than in two wheel drive.
The fronts had disc brakes and they do most of the braking any way on vehicles and lock up easier when you apply the brakes, well I never thought when I was in four wheel drive that when the fronts lock up so do the back wheels. So there I was with all four wheels locked up for a short distance going down the interstate. The warning sticker on the sun visor gave a warning about the ABS on the rear axle is inoperative when locked into four wheel drive. It may be different on newer vehicles today but it's still something to think about.

Yes people think they are invinceable when they use their four wheel drive.

I have been on both sides of the good samaritan thing, and it is a good feeling to help someone or have someone stop when you're in trouble. I don't know about other states, but NC has a "Good Samaritan Law" that protects people trying to give aid in emergencies from lawsuits.

Bingo, I think 4wd causes more problems around here then it solves.

A fellow down the road sold his wife's Blazer because he couldn't get her to slow down in the snow. Went back to a FWD car.

Honestly I would rather be in my Golf with snow tires then my wife's Pathefinder with 4wd. I think i might add some weight to the Pathfinder this year, maybe it will help keep the backend from getting squirly.

Of course the most fun is my '79 Chevy 2wd 1/2 ton with no weight in the back, that shouldn't leave the driveway if its slick.

My best story is a friend's wife adding a quart of oil to her car down the dipstick tube, no funnel. She said it took over an hour, blamed us for not telling her--MAD-- when we all started laughing!

There is a pretty nice moto-cross track a few miles up the road from my house. They have a few real big national qualify'n races a year. Buddy of mine's uncle owns it. They have people from all over the country show up with rented full size hummers pulling toy haulers. A few years ago it was real muddy and my buddy made over a grand durring one of the big races pulling people out for $50 each with his TW20. He said at first he felt bad about take'n folks money, but when he seen $40,000 hummers with just the back wheels spin'n after a while he figured they had it come'n.

Being you stated 6 ladies I will dump this true to life story on you.

It was in late summer, my son and a friend took the friends pontoon out on the Mississippi to chug a few beers. They came across a pontoon with twelve college girls that must have had a few adult beverages.

They were out of gas, so my sons friend hooked his boat on and pulled them to the gas dock in Clayton Ia. My sons friend offered to pump the gas for the ladies while my son just observed the ladies.

Once the gas was pumped they asked my sons buddy to take the money up to pay for the gas. He did and just as my sons buddy was coming down to the dock they said... here is your reward. Yea, all twelve flashed their fun bags. My friends buddy that did all the work and used his boat, wasn't paying attention as the dock steps were slippery. He just caught the tail end of the flash. My son who did nothing got the reward.

Yea' they tour the river as often as posible, but must not be a every day thing that happens.

And by the way, they refuse to take me along so far. Life is good!
