720 Gas governor

I"m looking at buying a 720 Gas JD NF. The guy told me it ran but is a little loose. He said the governor needed some work. There is a gear set in there that wears out.?? The tires are good and the tin is pretty straight. Hyd. and 3pt all good. $3500. Any ideas, or help. Thanks Jeff

New pair of governor gears will probably run about $700,and you usually end up replacing some bearings and weights also. Real easy to put $1200 plus into a governor. Just a guess on my part, but I've gone thru one on my A and one on my B in the last year.

Does it have power steering ? These models have several couplings in the fanshaft that wear out also.

With the engine shut off grab the fan blade and see how much free rotation it has. Hard to give an estimate of how much is too much ? but if you get a blade width or more ? you surly got problems.

If it has a JD hitch that isn't a bad price. And the gas models should be alot easier to work on then a diesel and should also have less wear on average.

I'd chance it. Odds are a fresh set of bearing and setting the clearances will make it workable.
Careful, too tight of lash will break gears before too loose of lash will on those govenor/fan drives.

Yes, it does have power steering. Looks like it has the factory JD 3pt. No upper link. Think you could get away with a light hone job, and rings if the engine looks good. Just to help freshen her up. Governor gear look to be expensive.

Thanks for the input. Wasn't real sure about the whole thing. Just trying to put all the numbers together to make sure I don't get buried in it.

It may not even need any engine work other then a complete tune up ? Do you have reason to suspect the engine is shot ? Engine work can get expensive and you have no idea what you find until you look. Used fan gears would be a good option . If you even need them ?
Those later 2 cyls. have aluminum pistons and the top ring groove likes to wear and then the rings break but usually by this time the engine was worn out to needing rebored anyway.

Just talked to the guy last night. He stated it had a little blow by when he ran it last. It has been sitting outside for a year or so.

Well if a seller says a little blow-by I translate that into ALOT ! unless you know that person to be honest. Sounds like it may be a little high priced as it likely will need rebored and new oversized pistons installed. A good chance it has the above mentioned worn out/broken top rings.

While you miss out on all the "fun" it is usually a better buy and wiser to buy one allready quote "restored" by someone else.

Just went to look at it at lunch. The fan does move back and forth about a blade width. Maybe all the issue is it the governor?? Found the serial number 7205232

Would be nice if you could get it running first.

It may or may not have gov. problems ? you could easily get that much play with some wear at each coupling up through the fanshaft and not have bad bevel gears. If it is noisy maybe the fylwheel is starting to loosen up ?

If only they came with a crystal ball.

Ya, hear ya there! I been trying to find info on the governor set-up--just short of buying a service manual do you know where I can get info or illastrations?

At jdparts.com you are to be able to download the parts catalogs. I haven't done it yet as I have slow speed internet.

Pat Browning just gave detailed instructions to someone over at the JD forum not long ago.
