Farm Movie (off topic)

This may be way off topic, but I'm trying to get the name of a farming movie I saw once. Can't remember a lot about it, but in the first few minutes, there was a gleaner combine shelling corn when a windstorm came up and blew it over. Later on, the farmer was trying to borrow money at the bank w/o any luck. This sound at all familiar to anyone? Thanks.

Yup. Jessica Lange, Sam Shepard. "Country." 1984. Set in Iowa.

Saw it in the theater, have it on tape.

There was one on HBO or was a made for TV movie about that time too that I only saw once. Looked for it on tape, never found it. It was called All Things In Season if I remember right. can't think off the top of my head who the woman was who starred in it. She was diagnosed with something terminal. Her husband rode their son too hard. He was dating a girl from the milk plant, wanted to farm but his Dad was discouraging him by being so rough on him.

Dennis Weaver (McCloud TV show guy....) also had a farm one about a custom combining operation he & his wife were running. He was down to one little JD combine all beat up, things were going bad for him too in the movie. I know the name of it, just not coming to me....

'Amber Waves' it was called from 1980. It was TV movie. Saw it replayed a few time over the years. Liked that one too.

Sounds like you are talking about 'Things in Their Season' starring Patricia Neal in 1974, a TV movie. Never saw it, sounds good. (I'm pretty good looking things up on the 'net, you gave me enough to work with....)

There was one from 1987.I think it was a CBS made for TV movie called "American Harvest" or "Race Against the Harvest" with Gleaners in the beginning and new 8820 Deeres at the end.It was based on custom harvesting and family problems. The main guy was on the tv show MASH for a while and one of his hired hands was in the movie Young Guns as a regulator named Charlie.

OK, Lets go way, way back. There was a movie made in the late 40's or early 50's, starred Humphrey Bogart about custom wheat cutters. They were running Massey Clippers. Lots of old combines and trucks. Remember they were running from the law, had a Clipper on the back of a truck and when they got to a narrow spot in the road, Bogey crawled back and cut the Clipper loose and it fell off the truck and blocked the road. Only saw it once on Late, Late Show when I was a kid. Anybody know the name of it? Chris

Yea - I think I'm thinking of your movie, not the one I mentioned. Couldn't remember the name of it at all. In it the wife put some property in hock to get the new JD's at the end - well now I've ruined it for everyone! :)

All were pretty good.

WOW!That's going way back for some of us young guys,I'll have to wait and see what some of the more "seasoned"people on here have to say.

Wild Harvest i remember after the fire the dud
found his jug behind the seat turned it up and the bottom was gone.

I remember "Country", they were loading a grain truck in a field when a tornado came up. It was very cheesy, like the Tazmanaian Devil. Anyway, I remember the grain truck getting tipped over, they later were driving it without any obvious damage. They had trouble getting money from the bank, and they came to auction off their equipment. The neighbors got angry and refused to bid, the banker said he"d just haul everything to another county. Wilford Brimley was in the movie, at some point he was glad they didn"t auction off the coffee maker.

heres something that may jog your memory. Featuring a young Roger Ebert and a still alive Gene Siskel, and a couple short clips from the movie.

American Harvest - Former custom wheat cutter now has brother inlaw combine his crop. Been wet so brother inlaw moves to other farms. There is already bad blood as he thinks brother inlaw had something to do with his sisters death. Anyway goes out and buys junk JD combines to do his own crop and then gets wiped out by a storm. Has to go on wheat harvest to make payments on farm. Hires crew. Cuts to Canada. Fights brother inlaw all of the way. Great movie. Combine demo, bar fight, accidents, boys will be boys stuff.

Jacob's Harvest - One brother who was to farm skips the county for 20 years. Other brother stays home and marrys other brothers girl friend. Common everyday dairy family. Cows stop producing and financial stress occurs. They find an electrical problem which is killing cows and reducing production. Brother comes home after not beening seen or heard of for 20 years. Family stress occurs ... wife was girl friend, things aren't going right, father gives attention to son who comes home. Eventually brother puts up car for a loan to replace electrical lines. Great movie.

Country - Been a while. Sort of from the farm crisis years. Struggling farm. Yes, they do some combining and the combine tips over. FMHA comes and hauls cattle away and forces a machinery auction. Father goes off the deep end and leaves the farm. Mom and kids run the farm for a while. Very hard on G'pa. A good movie. Might have been shot by towards Cedar Falls, Iowa or Waverly, Iowa.

That's IT. I couldn't remember Patricia Neals name to save my soul. It was right on the tip of my tongue but I couldn't get it. There was one about custom combining that starred Wayne Rogers from M*A*S*H too. I think I've got that one on tape somewhere.

Yea,and I can't think of the name of the guy who played his brother in law and competitor. He played Angie Dickinsons partner in that TV cop show. Seems to me that there were several "future stars" on their crews.

how about the one with mel gibson and sissy spacek???scott glen runs a giant grain corp that wants to flood the valley, i think its called river ?? not to bad COUNTRY IS A GOOD-UN 2 WATCH ON A HOT SUMMER NIGHT.CAUSE IT LOOKS AS COLD THERE AS IT IS HERE NOW;; SEEMS LIKE THE ONE WITH THE COMBINE DEMOLITION DERBY ALSO HAD SIVLER BULLIT THE JUMPING COMBINE, GOOGLE IT
