Woke up to -16F temp and -43F wind-chill in SE MN.

Kept the boy home from school today, although they didn't call it off.Guess it's not bad enough! No sense taking chances with wind-chill advisories out all day.

One thing I've wonderd about for a while; how did the Indians survive winters--I'm sure not all did, especially the little ones. Weather can't be that much colder, in spite of global warming--than it was 200 years ago. I know they lined the inside of their teepees with prairie grass, but still.... There's still not a lot of wood on the plains.

Here in central IL this morning it is 5 above with alot of wind. Just got back from doing chores. We had a rain shower last night as the temp dropped into the twenty's and every door, gate latch, chain and handle is froze this morning. Some places are slick other arent. Didnt get much snow and what we got blew away. Snow is forecast for tomorrow. But, there is always a bright side and this morning the mud is gone, the sun is out and all the animals are feed and happy.

School's cancelled here in Michigan today. All I can figure is that it's because the temp dropped from 40 last evening to 14 this morning. This is getting rediculous. I think they've used up their snow days already. There's gonna have to learn that global warming only exists in politics and learn to drive busses in an inch of snow. Or,start going all summer and take winters off. My dad was transportation supervisor for the local school for a lot of years and it used to be quite a deliberate discussion between him and the superintendant before they would cancel. There had to be a full blown blizzard.

But off the soapbox. When I was out there in a 40 mph wind this morning feeding,my eyes all teared up from the cold,it just had me glad I wasn't in the Dakotas. I hear it's 10 times worse there. Thank God for small favors.

The Indians weren't stupid. In cold and snow they simply holed up in their tepees with everything they needed to survive.

I lived in Green River, WY in 1951 6 months of that cold was enough for a lifetime. The wind would blow like crazy all day and the Temp was in the single digits or less, never heard of windchill back then.
They never let school out unless there was enough snow for us kids to sled in and then we got the afternoon off. the main street from the grammar school to the highway was always left with snow for us to sled on.
We were a lot tougher than kids are today. Walked 30 miles to school with no shoes and no coat. Wore short pants until we were 12 never complained about it.

PS the first half is true.

Worked for the railway up in northern canada and we once had a train derailment in the winter. It was -62deg far. , our diesel machines wouldnt start. I gotta say there was not a wisp of wind. You could hear the sap in the trees freezing and making a cracking sound.A bull moose had charged the side of that freight train and when it went under the cars it derailed the train.

Hey maybe the pres-elect is a good thing he just got done talking to al gore about global warming and this morning I'm freezing my batt off trying to get water pipes thawed, tractors started, chores done on the sleet. -4 and wc-14
