How rare is a 57 GMC 4x4 with a 348 (Pontiac) GMC?

My brother recently picked up a supposedly 55 GMC 4x4 half ton. The title says 1955, but the VIN on the title matches the data plate and states that it is a 1957. Anyway, the serial is 101-8 P T showing that the truck is a half ton 101 inch wheelbase 8 cylinder, Pontiac Michigan made 1957 model. Any opinions on this trade?

He was told by a street source that less than 700 of them were made. Is it actually rare or is someone pulling his leg?

Someone smarter than me will probably know, but I don't think the 348 engine came out until 1958. Easy to identify- instead of the valve covers being rectangles (when looked at from above), they each have two scallops taken out on the bottom side. Only 348 and 409 had that shape valve cover.

In the 50s, big GMC trucks had Pontiac V8s, and big Chevies had Buick V8s, til Chevy came out with the 348 in 1958. Saw a half ton GMC with a Pontiac V8 in it, with Hydra-Matic transmission, had a Chrome V-8 and Chrome Hydra-Matic script on the front fenders. In the last 50 years, anything could have been shoehorned into that truck. If it runs good, enjoy it.

I was an automobile mechanic in the 60s and 70s. GMC trucks were available with virtually every engine made by GM. I worked on a lot that had Pontiac and Buick engines. They did not use Chevy engines. I believe I am correct that they did not use Chevy engines until the late 60s.
The truck is only rarer then a Chevy truck of that year because they cost more new.

by memory from mid 60's job in pontiac garage, v-8 pontiac displacement, 55-287, 56-316, 57-347, 58-370, 59-389 used several years. i believe some pontiac engines were used in gmc pickups in late 50's however i thought they were 1 model year behind pontiac ie 57 used a 316 leroy

He's talking about a Pontiac derivative engine and not the 348 Chevy. It was a actually a 347 cu in for the 57. Not actually rare. It was the only V* used by GMC. The car engines were 370 cu in.

As the 347 Pontiac was used and renamed the 348 in this model, what value is the NAPCO 4x4 setup? How many were converted?

Was gonna check stovebolt, but as this did not come with a stoveboltdotcom, I couldn't guage the reception...

Thanks

Aaron

Chevy 2 ton trucks came out with a 260 V-8 in 1955 2nd series. I have 2 ton 2nd series with a 261 inline six. A neighbor had the V8 new from factory. I think that was only v8 in trucks then???

55 Chev V8 = 265ci

Chevy did come out with the 265 V8 for the 55 models, V8s in pickups were scarce 40 years ago. I was talking about the 1.5 ton trucks and bigger, C60 C70. The 261 was a GMC engine, is actually bigger than the old chevy 235, even tho they look like brothers. GMC also had a 302 inline six, talk about low end torque.

Don't forget the wonderful GMC V-6 that came along in about 1962? was available clear up to 2 tonners, then they hooked them tandem and converted them to Diesel for OTR trucks,

I meant a 265 v8 in 1955, The 261 in my 2 ton was the second motor in that, original 235 I think and was under powered for 300 bushel wheat load. 261 had plenty of power.
