Leak in radiator

Have a 1995 Toyota Previa - may have slow lead in radiator.

Been told best thing is to take it into shop. Any ideas about what to expect can be done short of replacing the radiator?

Slow leaks are tough...could be radiator, water pump or heater core, hoses. The mech should put on a pressure tester on the radiator filler opening and that'll will show the leak up to the tstat...after the tstat then it's visual detection. If the radiator is modern with crimp on plastic tanks, then you're in for a new one. If it's in the heater core, then the dash will probably have to come. Either way...put a large sheet of card board under it and see where it spots and follow it up. Some may tell you to put stop leak into it but that generally doesn't fix it long term.

Considering the age of the vehicle you might want to consider a product called DIKE which is made by the Colklin Co. A friend who was an over the road trucker said it is used extensively in the industry because it does not plug radiators. I have used it a few times with great success. You can get information at this website:

Good luck, Harvey

DO NOT PUT ANYTHING BUT WATER AND ANTIFREEZE IN YOUR COOLING SYSTEM! there now that I said that the water pump is most likely the cause if you can't see the leak at the plastic tank. in many cases the tank will split and you can see the leak. those water pumps are run by the timing belt and require a good deal of prep and work to be done. Any average do it yourselfer can handle it with the repair manual and patience.
