Roll-over plow Japan

I was in Northern Japan this week and here is a roll over plow. White Plastic Moldboards

Are they actually plastic, like a styrene, or is it some sort of PTFE or Teflon? Either one would probably help rid the moldboard of dirt accumulation...much along the same theory as the newer Diamond and Boss snow blades are available in plastic. I, too, would wonder about durability, especially if they're Japanese-made...

That’s a Dowdeswell three furrow reversible, built in England. Can’t comment on the white moldboards or skims, but Dowdeswell build very well respected equipment.

I have a set of those plastic moldboards on an old JD 44 2 bottom. Have had them for 12 years now. The seem to last longer in clay ground but I suspect they would wear out faster in course sand.

I was in Obihiro, now in Tokyo, flight is at 5:55 PM today, Dec 6, to Chicago. (it is Dec 5 in USA due to the date line)

I'm at Osan, it's 10:21 am Sat Dec 6, 2008. Have a nice flight back to the states. Not sure when I'll cross the pond. Trying to talk my wife to come visit and us doing mid-tour here in So. Korea. Take a few trips to Pusan, Seoul, 38th, and Museums. But if she decides not to, I might go to the states in Jun/Jul 09 for leave. Will return to the US, Nov/Dec 09 timeframe, possibly call it quits. Getting TOO OLD, time to punch out.

Nice pic. Dowdswell is a brit plow. I believe the plastic boards are to help prevent sticking in heavy clay soils. I don't imagine wear would be near the issue in clay as it would in sand.

Surprisingly... I've seen some composite materials like that which make a very hard wear surface. It'll wear steel before it wears the composite. The downside with those things, I would expect at least, would be strength. It probably wouldn't take much to snap one.
I'm sure they have their purpose though.

I did not know that farming was that big in Japan for use of a 3 bottom tractor plow. Is that considered to be a big plow are is that about average?

Dowdeswell were the largest plough manufacturer in England in the 1990's. These particular ploughs were based on the model DP-8, sold in 2 and 3 furrow sizes, modified for export and handled in Japan by Okia Ford ,the Ford tractor distributor in Japan. Made in 12 or 14 inch wide furrow sizes.
The plastic bodies were made in Europe and were fitted because the Japanese volcanic soils would flow over the plastic, whereas the soils stuck to conventional steel mouldboards. The soil is not abrasive but sticky. Note the front & bottom waering shins are made of normal plough metal.

Where in Northern Japan?

I lived in Misawa which is near the northern end of the main island, just south of Aomori a ways. All I ever saw was rice paddies and walk-behinds, and I got around that end of the island pretty thoroughly.

Of course, that was 35 years ago, and things have no doubt changed.
